Even with the sluggish economy local individuals continued to support one of the Caribou Rotary Club’s biggest projects, The Draw. Well-known for its chances to win cash drawings and snowmobiles, Rotarians this year decided to mix it up a little and instead of three new snow sleds that offered changes on two sleds and a brand new four-wheeler.
On Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Caribou Inn and Convention Center, Joe Bouchard, president of the Caribou Historical Society had the honor of drawing the lucky tickets.
Mark Draper, Caribou Rotary president-elect and The Draw project coordinator said that out of 1,0000 tickets that were available for sale, Rotarians succeeded in selling 817.
The Rotary Club supports local youth programs in the community along as well as assisting with other community events and projects.
This year Draper stated that a donation from the proceeds from “The Draw” is to be donated to the Caribou Historical Society’s Pole barn project. Another recipient will be Camp Adventure, a summer camp for children with diabetes.
Big Draw winners this year included the Chris Martin family who found themselves the proud owners of a 2009 Yamaha Grisslie ATV, which was presented to them by John Raymond at Gary’s Yamaha.
Mona Martin, who purchased her ticket from Rotarian Diane Dubois, said she and her husband had always entertained the idea of being able to go four-wheeling with their children, Liam, Owen and Ellie but really didn’t find it to be a prudent purchase considering the economy situation.
Jason Peterson bought his winning ticket at the door the night of the actual drawing from Mark Shea. Although Peterson admitted he wasn’t an avid snowmobiler, he does have a Harley Davidson and an interest in four-wheeling. The 2010 F570 Artic Cat snowmobile  was presented to Peterson by Bob Plourde Artic Cat and Ski-Do dealer.
Rod Mahan of Mars Hill, was president of the Caribou Rotary 15 years ago and said that he was the one who actually came up with the idea of having the snowmobile raffle as a major fund-raiser for the group.
Mahan purchased his winning Draw ticket from Rotarian Dave Wilcox and said he bought it mainly to support his former Rotary Club and thought his grandkids would enjoy having it to use. The keys to Mahan’s Polaris 550 ES(electric start) were presented by Myron Hale at County Sports in Caribou.
