PRESQUE ISLE — Two Presque Isle High School cheerleaders had the opportunity of a lifetime Dec. 3-6 when they participated in Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade in Orlando, Fla. The parade taping was held on Sunday, Dec. 6 and will be aired on ABC 9 a.m. Christmas morning.
Senior Jordyn Kinney and sophomore Michaela Powers of PIHS were among 300 cheerleaders chosen to participate in the parade. The girls were surprised when they found out that the NCA cheerleaders would be performing in the parade’s opening number with the Jonas Brothers. The NCA cheerleaders were placed in the inner circle, closest to the group, in an opening flash mob dance.
The two girls said they were “really excited” and couldn’t wait to let all their friends back in Presque Isle know that they reached out and touched Kevin and Nick Jonas as they walked through the crowd.
Kinney and Powers were selected for the parade based on their participation in the National Cheerleaders Association’s summer camp July 24 at Husson University in Bangor. While at camp, cheerleaders worked on skills and techniques with NCA cheering staff. Throughout the camp, the NCA staff identified cheerleaders that displayed outstanding skill in leadership, stunting and jumping and named them as All-American nominees. At the end of camp a group of these nominees were selected for the NCA All-American Team. These cheerleaders have the opportunity to attend NCA special events throughout the year.
Participating in the event was not all fun and games as Kinney and Powers had many hours of practice with rehearsals starting at 5 a.m. and night practices lasting until 10 p.m.
The Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade, held at Disneyland, features Ryan Seacrest as a host of the annual parade. Among the many artists performing in the parade were Stevie Wonder, Demi Lovato and Anika Noni Rose. Also making appearances were Cheryl Burke and Tony Dovolani of “Dancing with the Stars” and Selena Gomez of “Wizards of Waverly Place.”
