Hammond — Scarlet fever has spread its usual dread, besides finding a victim in Hammond.
Local — Miss Vella Barrett, a teacher in the Grammar school, has returned from her vacation in Bridgewater.
Moved — The old building formerly used as the Houlton Woolen Mill office was moved last week to a position adjoining the rear of the upper mill and will be used as a storehouse. J.B. Brewer had charge of the work.
Poultry notes — Gather eggs several times a day, clean out the nest boxes and burn the old straw, start right by getting better hens; end right by keeping them better, a good grain mixture for winter evening feeding is two-fourths whole corn, one-fourth wheat and one-fourth oats.

Winter storm — Nature’s New Year’s greeting to Maine and Aroostook County was the first storm of the winter season blocking roads, paralyzing transportation and isolating many towns with a total snowfall of ten inches here, accompanied by high winds.
Winners — Eighteen boys and girls were made happier on Christmas Day because they were winners in the S.L. White Drug Company contest. Receiving dolls were, Joyce Robinson, Meriol Burnham, Joyce Daigle, Joan Crawford, Deloris Carpenter, Eleanor Newhouse, Barbara J. Daigle and Jennie McDonald. The boys were awarded a variety of toys including, trains, trucks, erector sets, roller skates and cowboy outfits. Receiving gifts were, Ervin Ferguson, Bobby McNair, Percy Hall Jr., Bobby Beek, Tim Donovan, Gerard York and Gerald Jackins.
Mr. 1935 — Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brewer of the Foxcroft Road appear to be proud parents of the first Houlton baby to be born in 1935. The new addition is seventh in the family and the fourth boy. He will be known as Maurice Albert Brewer.

Smyrna — An open house will be held to afford the general public an opportunity to tour the facilities of the first dairy cattle loose housing and milking parlor system in Aroostook County at Burns Lilley’s farm off the Smyrna Center Road.
Hovey Hill — Ski lessons are available for children each Saturday, sponsored by the Houlton Parks and Recreation Department. Sanford Gregg, assisted by Bob Ellis, Fred Putnam and Bill Opdyke, will conduct lessons.
Houlton — Clayton Currie, manager of Dunn Furniture Company announced the completion of a new modern furniture warehouse on Weeks Street.
Dyer Brook — Bill and Elizabeth Lougee and Gary Sherbino of Island Falls enjoyed skiing at the Lougee Farm Saturday.
Community TV — A new community television system is being installed this week for the community of Island Falls and will be known as Katahdin TV according to its Vice President Malcolm York of Houlton.
By-pass needed — The Houlton Planning Board is considering requesting the Maine State Highway Commission to build one section of the Federal Interstate Highway now beginning at the North Road and going west across B Stream and then tie in with another by-pass under consideration by the Town of Houlton. By building a by-pass from Bangor Street across the Interstate highway, through traffic would be able to move from north and south without coming through town and creating a traffic bottleneck.

Pastor leaving — Dr. Gary G. Johnson has resigned as pastor of the Military Street Baptist Church in Houlton. After a nine-year ministry here, Dr. Johnson has assumed a new role as area pastor for American Baptist Churches of Maine.
Smyrna — A Bangor & Aroostook freight train had five cars loaded with pulpwood derail at the crossing in the town of Smyrna Mills.
Most valuable player — Houlton sophomore Terry Cummings had 40 points in two games and earned the selection of Most Valuable Player in the Christmas tournament at Houlton High School.
Houlton girls — The Lady Shires captured their third consecutive York County Christmas Tournament. Diane Nagle led the scoring against Scarborough with 15 points and for one of the rare times faced a player taller than herself from Scarborough, at 6 foot 7 inches. Mary Harrigan had 21 points against Thornton Academy. In the final game against Biddeford, Nagle had 28 points and 18 rebounds.
East Hodgdon — A reception was held at the East Hodgdon Union Church for the new pastor, Kevin Grant, Mrs. Grant and their son, Micah. The church presented them with a rocking chair.
