To the Editor:
They say “Time flies when you are having fun.” Although the last several weeks of a serious family illness have not been any fun, it has certainly been a spiritually rewarding time for me. This is because, I now have confidence that if anything were to happen to me, the Halfway Home Pet Rescue (HHPR) board of directors and volunteers would continue the work of rescuing cats as though I had never been. The free pet food pantry would continue and the cat adoption fairs.
This is great. This is the way a corporation should run with no one person being irreplaceable. I often say, “If I should die or get really ill, you should know …” I realize now that my biggest worry does not exist at all. The Halfway Home Pet Rescue’s high standard of quality medical care will continue regardless of who is steering the corporation. I have been filled with a joyous awe each time I have heard the words, “I can do …” from a different volunteer/board member. I am not going anywhere, but can relax about the future HHPR. It is in the heart of many animal lovers.
I certainly need to mention Anne Price, Helen Widdecomb, Jean and Ritchie Nadeau, Eleanor Gagnon, Garrick and Sandy Milton, Judy and Jon Robertson, Julie Damboise, Louanna Reitmeyer, Doris Jeffery, Ruth Ross, Colette and Kayla Cormier, Colleen Murphy, Jerry Nelson, David Bickford, Warren Dobson, Beaulieu’s Garage, Lion’s Share Book Store, Caribou Chamber of Commerce, Sharon Watson, David Sleeper and the Expect More Dollar Store. Also, the people who continued to need to place cats in our care, but who had the patience to care for the animal by themselves while we tried to find alternative foster placements. All these people kept HHPR running smoothly.
The winner of the Beautiful Cat Quilt made by Carolyn Hayden of Caribou was Wendy Koenig. Three lovely cats went to good homes at the cat fair on Sunday: Bonnie, Babe and Angie. Also, Tiny Tim, Rocky, Big Daddy and Alex are being thought about and I feel these homes will come through. What a wild and wonderful afternoon.
At this point, our greatest need is help with the medical bills. We are spaying/neutering, leukemia testing, doing shots and parasite care. If you can send even just $2 at a time, please know that we are grateful for it. It has been a long, cold winter and the animals have appreciated the help.
We are an all-volunteer, 501c3 non-profit shelter. When leaving a message on my answering machine, speak slowly and repeat the telephone number twice.
