Fund-raising continues for girls hockey team

PRESQUE ISLE — The Presque Isle youth hockey team is continuing its quest to raise money in the hopes of one day becoming a varsity sport at Presque Isle High School. Irving Forest Products, Inc. became the latest organization to donate funds to the cause, presenting the group with $500. John Cole of Irving attended a recent practice and presented the team with the money.

The group was formed in 2006 by Dennis and Cindy Albert.
“We want to start a varsity girls ice hockey team for Presque Isle High School,” Dennis Albert said. “this will give young women who have played in the junior leagues a chance to take the skills they have learned and continue to hone those skills playing against other young women. It is significant because it [hockey] is the only team sport played  at PIHS without a female division.”
Thus far, the girls youth hockey team has held a candle fund-raiser and have wrote more than 20 grants, but additional funding is still needed. Any organization or business that would like to donate should  contact Dennis Albert at 207-768-2757.
