At a recent meeting of the Caribou Historical Society members discussed a number of ideas directed toward creating a more positive future for the organization, including making community members aware of the fund-raising events and what is available at the museum location for everyone to enjoy. “We need to preserve the present for the future,” said Joe Bouchard, president, “for the children and generations to come. We are looking for ways to make the Caribou Historical Society more visible in the community.”
The society hosts a number of community fund-raisers including the “Old-fashioned Barn Dance,” to be held Saturday evening, Feb. 27, at the Caribou VFW Post Home. All proceeds from this event will benefit the construction of a pole-barn needed to house some of the many larger items.
The group is also planning a chicken-stew affair featuring a display of vintage snowmobiles, the date to be announced at a later time.
The historical site offers to visitors a chance to walk through the Harriet Cousins Heritage Trail, learn about the perennial flower garden, peruse the authentic school house or take in some of the 10,000 items that are all cataloged and displayed within the museum itself.
The Caribou Historical Society and Whittier Museum is open every Saturday from noon until 4 p.m. Appointments may be scheduled for group tours. Summer hours starting in June at the society will be Thursday, Friday and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.
“We want to bring awareness to the people of Caribou of just what this organization has to offer.
The next meeting of the Caribou Historical Society will take place on Tuesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. Interested persons are encouraged to attend.
