Houlton girls undefeated, claim title

The Houlton Aroostook Youth Basketball League (AYBL) girl’s 3-4 grade team finished the season 22-0, capturing the AYBL title and three tournament championships — the AYBL NMCC 3-4 grade championship, the Hampden Bronco Classic and the Old Town YMCA Bob Messier Youth Basketball Tournament.

    The final tournament of the season, the Messier Tournament, was decided after three pool games, along with a quarterfinal, semifinal and championship game.
The Houlton girl’s picked up a lopsided 35-5 win in their first pool game against Ellsworth behind a balanced-scoring attack. Kolleen Bouchard led the way with nine points, while Kristen Graham and Aspen Flewelling each tossed in eight points. Mia Hanning and Alexis Miller each finished with four points apiece.
In the second pool game for Houlton, the girls soundly defeated Caravel (Carmel/Levant), 44-24. The Houlton girls had three players hit double figures, with Bouchard having 17 points, while Flewelling and Graham each had 12 points. Carolyn and Rebecca Mooers combined for three points.
Houlton again routed its third pool opponent Calais, 45-12. They were led by Bouchard’s 15 points and Graham’s 10. The Mooers twins and Flewelling had four points apiece, while Abbie Worthley, Hanning, Miller and Janelle Goff all added a basket.
In the quarterfinals, Houlton picked up a decisive 38-13 win over Ellsworth behind Bouchard and Flewelling, who each scored 10 points. R. Mooers dropped in six points, while Graham had five. C. Mooers added three points, while Miller and Goff chipped in with a basket each.
The Houlton girls won their semifinal game against Brewer, 31-20. Bouchard tossed in 12, while Graham netted 10 and Flewelling added eight.
The championship game pitted Houlton against Hermon. The Houlton girls pulled out to a 20-6 lead and never looked back for a 35-20 victory.
Bouchard keyed the offense with 15 points, while Graham and Flewelling both had 10 points apiece.
