The Houlton Softball Association is gearing up for the 2010 softball season. It’s shaping up to be an early spring and the first captains’ meeting will be held on Friday, April 16 at the Gentle Memorial Building (Houlton Rec Center) at 6:30 p.m.
Anyone who is interested in organizing or who currently has an organized team is encouraged to attend the meeting. There will be a discussion on league rules and schedules. Organizers are happy with early discussions, which may lead to as many as 12 teams in the league this season.
Organizers are looking for interest from co-ed softball teams. However, if there is not interest from at least a minimum of four teams, a co-ed league will not be formed.
The league will make arrangements so that men players can play in both the men’s league and the co-ed league.
If you have any interest in forming a co-ed softball team, call Clyde Warman at 521-6319 before the first captains’ meeting on April 16.
The Houlton Softball Association is also gearing up for its fifth annual ‘Beat The Heat’ men’s softball tournament, tentatively scheduled for June 4-6.
This will be a double-elimination tournament with prizes, a homerun contest, food, drinks and a lot of fun. Players do not have to be in the Houlton league to participate in the tournament.
The entry fee is $170, and T-shirts are awarded to the champions. Last year’s tournament featured all local teams, including a team from Calais, as well as teams from Augusta and Presque Isle.
Any team interested in participating in the tournament, call Warman.
