Grade 10
Limestone Community School
Hi, I am Julia Weatherhead, I’m a sophomore and I go to the Limestone Community School.
My favorite part in Biology would have to be biology labs in school. I really liked the part when we got work with the microscopes to observe soil. The point of this lab was to find living things might have been once living. The only thing I found that was once living was small pieces of grass and small fragments of animal wastes. Another lab I enjoyed doing was staining onions. For the onion … we had to cut a thin small layer of the onion, put it on a slide with the methylene blue. Then we examined the slide with a microscope to see if we could find any cells that might have cell walls, a nucleus or organelles. The purpose of staining the onion was to compare it to cells and to see the organelles.
Another lab I really enjoyed was bacteria staining. In this lab we first had to find bacteria in the school building, that might be on any school property in the building that might be dirty. We then inserted the bacteria into a tube with the broth and we let sit for a day. Then the next day we inserted the bacteria on a slide and heated the slide to kill the bacteria. We then would stain the slide with liquids. For every stain we would rinse it with water. The purpose of this experiment was to stain the bacteria with different liquids.
These were my three favorite activities in Biology Lab I had fun with.
