A case involving several burglaries in Aroostook County came to a close March 19, when Brian McBreairty, 42, of Aroostook County and Sebago, pleaded guilty and was sentenced in Caribou Superior Court for the crimes.

Justice E. Allen Hunter sentenced McBreairty for a string of burglaries and thefts which occurred in Aroostook County during the fall of 2008 and winter of 2009. The incidents involved a number of government and business offices that were burglarized after hours in the communities of Stockholm, Connor, New Canada, Weston, St. John, Limestone, Ashland and Eagle Lake. The investigations were coordinated by officers of the Maine State Police and Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, and reports were filed by local police in Limestone and Ashland.
Thousands of dollars in property was taken as a result of the thefts.
“On Feb. 1, 2009, an Ashland business had its safe broken into. When staff arrived to open the store the next morning, they discovered the alarm had been ripped off (the wall) and the safe was broken into. It was determined that about $8,000 and merchandise, including flashlights, were taken,” said Chief Cyr Martin, Ashland Police Department.
McBreairty will serve five years in prison, followed by six years of probation, according to a press release from the D.A.’s office. He was ordered to pay restitution of $47,541.23.
The investigation cracked several other burglary cases in Aroostook County, for which charges were not brought.
The State of Maine was represented at the March 19 proceedings by Assistant District Attorney John Pluto. McBreairty’s attorney was Jeff Pickering, of Houlton.
