UMPI players gain league honors
University of Maine at Presque Isle softball players Brittany Humphrey and Nicole Russell and baseball player Tyler Delaney picked up Sunrise Conference awards for their performances on the diamond this past week.
Humphrey
Humphrey, a shortstop, batted .415 for the Owls during a 12-game spring break trip this past week to earn Player of the Week honors. The junior from New Gloucester smacked 17 hits during the trip, including a pair of home runs and three doubles and she finished with eight RBIs and scored 10 runs. She homered and drove in four runs in a 7-6 loss to Penn State Hazleton and then went deep again in a 12-9 win over Green Mountain College. She ripped two doubles against Catholic University and on the week stole four bases in four attempts.

The Pitcher of the Week was Russell, who notched two wins and a save in seven games this week. The senior from Newcastle struck out two batters and scattered six hits over seven innings with just two walks as the Owls beat Southern Virginia University, 4-1. She also allowed six hits and one walk in five innings in a 16-4 win over Green Mountain College and then notched a save in 3-2/3 innings of work, allowing just one hit while fanning three batters, as the Owls completed the sweep of Green Mountain with a 12-9 win. Russell finished the week with a 6.46 earned-run average.
Delaney In baseball, Delaney was named a co-player of the week. The senior shortstop batted .417 in seven games for the Owls. The Truro, Nova Scotia native banged out 10 hits and drove in six runs while scoring four. He walked three times, stole three bases and finished with a .458 slugging percentage. Delaney went 3 for 5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs in a 15-7 loss to Briarcliff College. He also drove in two runs, going 2 for 4, in a 12-4 win over Philadelphia Biblical University.
He shared the honor with Reynaldo Nunez of Fisher College.
