Hodgdon High School has some bright new faces lighting up its classrooms this spring with the addition of Miss Desiree Ellis, Miss Heidi Sattler, and Mrs. Hillary Meideros. Miss Ellis is currently completing the second and final half of her student teaching in the English Department under the tutelage of Mrs. Mills. Miss Ellis is an honored alumni of Hodgdon High School’s Class of 2006 and will graduate from the University of Maine at Presque Isle this May with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in English. Miss Ellis loves to read, write, listen to music, and spend time with her family. She also enjoys playing tennis, swimming, taking photographs, and spending time with friends. She has taken courses in American Sign Language and enjoys signing every chance she gets.
Miss Ellis shared some insight into her time at HHS, “ I enjoy interacting with students both in school and during extracurricular activities. My priority is the student, and I am willing to spend as much time as necessary working with students who need extra help and support. I always jump at the chance to be involved…I have attended several senior plays and suppers and many of the 2009-2010 basketball games.”
Miss Ellis has been involved in the Senior Project Presentations with teachers and administration, and will be attending the Cole Land Transportation Museum Project with the 10th grade class on April 29th. Giving back to the community is not new for Miss Ellis as she has been a volunteer for years, working with organizations such as the Red Cross, the Degenhardt Foundation, Becca’s Closet and the Hodgdon Parent Teacher Organization. Everyone at Hodgdon High School would like to thank Miss Ellis for her hard work at HHS. We are so glad she chose to spend her final days of being an official “student” with us! Her cooperating teacher, Mrs. Mills, said, “Desiree is a natural teacher and fit in with the staff and students immediately. We will truly miss having her in class and are so proud of her graduation in May. Congratulations!”
Miss Heidi Sattler is currently working with several students with challenges, helping them transition to thinking and planning about their future. She said, “It’s encouraging to see teens succeed and to gain self confidence. I love it!” Miss Sattler graduated from Houlton High School in 2004 and graduated from Bethany Bible College in Sussex, New Brunswich in 2009 with a BA in Religion with a focus on Global Ministry.
Miss Sattler shared, “My faith is my life. I do my best to live that out daily and to bless those around me with the love that God has shown me. I enjoy being around people and trying to bring the best out of people and situations. I thrive on helping others and love being able to impact teens at the same time that they are impacting me.” Miss Sattler loves adventure, experiencing new things, and travelling to different parts of the world. She even lived in New Zealand for over six months as a youth pastor, climbed an inactive volcano, and bungee jumped off of a bridge. Teaching teens should be a cinch after those feats!
Mrs. Hillary Medeiros is Hodgdon High School’s new Biology, Environmental Science, and Wildlife Ecology Teacher. Mrs. Medeiros is from Ellsworth, Maine and has a double major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a minor in chemistry from the University of Maine. She finished her education classes at Husson University after working at The Jackson Lab.
Mrs. Medeiros loves to ride horses, although hers is currently in North Carolina with her mom. She loves volleyball and has started a rec volleyball club that meets Tues. and Thurs. in the school gym. She is interested in all things science, of course, especiallly new developments in genetics research.
Mrs. Medeiros says, “I wish I had gotten to meet parents at the Parent Teacher Conferences in the fall. They should come in and meet me…I have several pets in the classroom too- come and meet the hermit crabs or my many different fish- one might even have babies!”
Mrs. Medeiros is planning to climb Mt. Katahdin for her birthday and is calling her training program, “Couch to Katahdin!” Go, Mrs. Medeiros! We are so excited to have you on our staff.
