On Sunday, April 25 at 2 p.m. in the Caribou Performing Arts Center, over 20 performers will bring fun and dance to Aroostook County. The performers will show off their dance talents to a voting audience. Modeled after “So You Think You Can Dance,” the competitors will perform for a panel of judges as well as the voting audience who will ultimately choose the County’s best dancer. The competition is being hosted to benefit Aroostook Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) Coalition. Since its initiation in 2007, ASAP Coalition has implemented diverse substance abuse prevention activities throughout Aroostook County, including implementation of advertising campaigns aimed at preventing underage drinking, prescription drug abuse, and inhalant abuse; provision of resources and training to prevent prescription drug abuse and diversion to health care providers; and provision of Asset Building to local communities.
Although prevention work is currently funded through a 5-year Federal grant, funding is scheduled to end in 2012. However, ASAP Coalition is not planning to stop countywide prevention work when Federal funding ends. Instead, it will hold a number of fundraising events over the next 2 years with the goal of establishing an endowment fund that will allow for continuation of prevention work.
Admission will only cost $8 per person. To buy tickets, visit your local Key Bank or go to www.asapcoalition.com/move-n-groove.html.
