The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department will conduct its first organizational meetings for men’s and co-ed softball on Tuesday, April 20. The men’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., while the co-ed meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. Both meetings will be held at the Caribou Recreation Center on Bennett Drive. Any team wishing to participate in the leagues this summer should have a representative at the meeting. Anyone who is not on a team and wishes to play may call the recreation center at 493-4224 to get their names on a list that will be passed on to the team representatives at the meeting.
League rules, dues and starting dates will be discussed and all necessary paper work will be given to each team representative. Contact the Caribou Recreation Center at 493-4224 for more information.
The Caribou Little League will hold its registration meeting for the 2010 season tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Caribou Middle School cafeteria.
All girls and boys that are 9 to 12 years old on or before April 30, 2010 are urged to attend with their parents. Those youngsters trying out for the first time are required to bring a copy of their birth certificate or a document which will verify their birth date and a completed application form.
Returning players who are still eligible to play in the league must fill out a new application form for 2010 and are encouraged to attend this meeting with their parents.
Along with receiving information for the upcoming season, all managers will be introduced and a raffle will be held with some lucky winners taking home Little League baseballs, gift certificates from Reno’s Family Restaurant and many other prizes.
Tryouts for 2010 are Saturday, April 24 at the new Caribou Recreation and Wellness Center gymnasium, beginning at 9 a.m. for 9- and 10-year-olds and approximately 10 a.m. for 11- and 12-year-olds. The second and final tryout will be held at the Caribou Middle School gym on Tuesday, April 27 at 6:45 p.m. More information for the tryouts will be announced at the meeting.

The Presque Isle Indoor Pool is offering an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor class April 20 -23 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For those planning on instructing swimming lessons this summer, this is a great class to learn how to teach swimming skills.
The indoor pool will have general swim during the April vacation on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1-2:45 p.m., and Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 7-8:45 p.m.
The Houlton Softball Association is also gearing up for its fifth annual ‘Beat The Heat’ men’s softball tournament, tentatively scheduled for June 4-6.
This will be a double-elimination tournament with prizes, a homerun contest, food, drinks and a lot of fun. Players do not have to be in the Houlton league to participate in the tournament.
The entry fee is $170, and T-shirts are awarded to the champions. Last year’s tournament featured all local teams, including a team from Calais, as well as teams from Augusta and Presque Isle.

The Northern Maine Soap Box Derby is now accepting registrations for its 14th annual derby race. The race is set for Saturday, June 20 at Derby Hill in Houlton’s Community Park.
Youth must be 8 years old by June 20 through 16 years of age to participate. The derby will have two divisions: Stock and Super Stock.
Deadline for registrations is May 1 and the fee is $30 per racer.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Outdoor Adventure Program International (OAPI) has a couple events lined up for the remainder of the spring.
A Wilderness First Aid Certification will be offered on Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18. This certification covers CPR and First Aid plus advanced skills for outdoor emergencies. The cost is $100. For more information, contact Anja Whittington at 768-9537.
On Saturday, May 8, outdoor rock climbing at Acadia National Park is planned. Rain date is Sunday, May 9. Get outside and climb real rock with a certified rock climbing guide. No experience is required. The group will leave Gentile Hall at 5:30 a.m. and return by 10 p.m. Cost for UMPI students is $30; $40 for non-students. Registration deadline is Monday, May 3.
