Wheeler, Cyr grab Runoff 5K titles

PRESQUE ISLE – Curtis Wheeler of Buxton was a decisive winner and established a new course record in the process at Saturday’s University of Maine at Presque Isle Spring Runoff 5K Road Race.

Eighty three runners and walkers participated in this year’s UMPI Spring Runoff 5K Road Race. A course record was set by Curtis Wheeler of Buxton, who finished in 15 minutes and 33 seconds.
The 24-year-old Wheeler cruised around the course in 15 minutes and 33 seconds. He was 28 seconds ahead of runner-up P.J. Gorneault of Caribou, who came in at 16:01.
In third place was Thomas Beckum of Caribou in 17:35.
The female winner was Gabrielle Cyr of Buxton, whose time of 19:23 was good for ninth overall.
Despite the cool temperatures, a total of 80 runners and three walkers participated in the annual event, which is the second race in the Aroostook Musterds Running Club’s 2010 Challenge Series and also is a fundraiser for the UMPI Owl cross country team.
The first-place walkers were Sonya Richardson and Vanessa McDougal, both of Caribou. Their time was 44:35.
In the relay category, the Presque Isle trio of Jesse Rochester, Matt Eager and Logan Thibeau won with a time of 17:41. The girls’ team of Jaylee Fox, Elizabeth Wright and Hallie Bartlett, also of Presque Isle, had a time of 20:48.
Age division winners were: 14-and-under female, Bonnie Corey of Presque Isle, 33:37; 14-and-under male, Jonathan Rochester of Presque Isle, 21:16; 15-18 female, Danni Anderson of Mapleton, 25:18; 15-18 male, Timothy Freme of Caribou, 17:57; 19-29 female, Susan Plissey of Stockholm, 21:42; 19-29 male, Brian Powers of Caribou, 19:40; 30-39 female, Michelle Roy of Caribou, 22:12; 30-39 male, Gorneault; 40-49 female, Angela Ewings of Littleton, 22:19; 40-49 male, Jeff Ashby of Presque Isle, 18:44; 50-59 female, Connie McLellan of Cross Lake, 26:51; 50-59 male, David Tree of Fredericton, New Brunswick, 19:52; 60-69 male, Larry Tonzi of Houlton, 23:35.

The next scheduled road race in the Challenge Series is the S.W. Collins 5K in Caribou June 27.
