SOAR of Houlton Operation: Cookie Jar

Members of friends of SOAR — Support Our American Recruits —  of Houlton met to put the final touches on care packages filled with cookies to be mailed to soldiers with ties to Houlton.  Operation: Cookie Jar is completed each year in time for Mother’s Day. Enclosed in the boxes is a card that reads, “When the soldier can’t come to the cookie jar… you mail the cookie jar to the soldier.” Boxes are sent priority mail to APOs around the world.
“Thankfully, we have had response cards come back saying the box arrived in good condition with the contents edible and very much appreciated,” said Marilyn Sjoberg, SOAR member.
Postage costs for campaigns can run between $50-$100. SOAR accepts donations of any amount by mail at 34 Corner Rd., Hodgdon, Maine 04730. Additionally, in order to help plan for future campaigns, SOAR leadership is kicking off the SOAR 60 fund-raiser.
“If we could count on 50 people, willing to donate just five dollars a month, that would give us a base of funds we could draw from when our soldiers request higher dollar items such as head lamps and phone cards,” Sjoberg remarked. “Community support has dropped off recently and yet given the opportunity, I believe folks will help us out knowing that the male and female soldiers we encourage all have relatives here in the greater Houlton area.”
