Just a reminder that this coming Saturday, June 19th, there will be a huge yard sale, rain or shine, at the home of Tim and Dorene Humphrey, Northern Musical Supply, on the Calais Road. Their home is on the left at the top of the hill, after the bowling alley. From 9 am to 1 pm the Houlton Humane Society will be selling “trash and treasures” and if you have ever been to an animal shelter yard sale you’ll know that the opportunity to score big is there. We do not price our items, we ask for donations only, so you can pick up some really sweet deals. We only ask that you be fair and not haul off a whole truck load of items and donate a dollar. That just kind of defeats the whole purpose.
I’ve had a chance to see some of the items already donated and I guarantee if you come early you’ll find something to buy. If you would like to donate to this event, stop by the Humphrey’s Friday evening after 5 pm and drop off your donations. If you have items that need to be picked up at your house, just let us know, we can arrange that.
The timing of this fund raiser is perfect. Funds are low, which is not uncommon when you run a non-profit organization, but bills are high, especially high right now, so help us take care of the animals, we really appreciate it.
Also at this fund raiser will be some beautiful cats and kittens, maybe a dog or two that are ready for adoption. This has been a tough week for us as we have had nineteen new animals brought in and we are running out of foster homes. We are very fortunate to have friends in other shelters who have agreed to take a few of our pets to help relieve the burden, but our goal is to rehome these animals, not keep them in foster care or move them from shelter to shelter but to find new homes for them and we can only do that with your help.
One thing you can do to help us that will take only seconds is to network with your friends. Many of you are on face book, if you send out a message to your friends about our yard sale and our adopt-a-thon, this information will get out to hundreds, and maybe someone on your list is interested in adopting.
Another thing you can do is if you are coming to our yard sale, bring your bottles with you if you want, and we’ll take them to the redemption center for you and use the money to help the Shelter. Or bring your used ink cartridges with you. All these small gestures really add up.
If you have lost a pet, keep calling the Shelter, just because we are under quarantine doesn’t mean an animal hasn’t been brought in. The building is quarantined but we still take in strays and place them in foster care so if Rover goes missing, call us.
The perception might be that we are all on “vacation” because the building is closed but nothing could be further from the truth. I have never seen a staff work so hard, they are continuing to scrub, paint, and urethane, to get the building ready to reopen. They help clean the animals that are in foster care. The other night our directors were at the shelter till 8 pm, assisting with a new animal intake
There is much to do, and your thoughtful and generous support will help us continue to care for these animals until we find new homes for them. Remember, tell your friends that we do have animals available for adoption and encourage them to come visit us Saturday June 19th and take home a new friend. We appreciate it.
And Thanks to all of you who “Dined out for the Animals” last Wednesday night, and to the restaurants that participated!
