MARS HILL NEWS

by Tomi Henderson

There will be a celebration and parade followed by a speaker and refreshments at the American Legion Hall in Mars Hill on Saturday, July 3 at 2 p.m. sponsored by the American Legion of Mars Hill and under the leadership of its commander, Ron Gallop. The parade lineup will begin at 1 p.m. at Fort Street School. The parade will go through town and down Nutter Street to end.

If you have a group that would like to be in the parade, just be at Fort Street School at 1 p.m. for lineup. For more information, call Gallop at 429-9215.
Donald W. Beattie, author of “Sunrise Patriots: First with the Fifty Star Flag” (2010) will be the guest speaker. A native of Mars Hill. Beattie was chairperson of the Mars Hill Jaycees’ celebration committee which celebrated on July 4, 1960 including raising the first 50-star flag atop Mars Hill Mountain at 4:41 a.m. in commemoration of the entrance of Hawaii into the Union on that day 50 years ago. The sun hits Mars Hill 13 seconds before any other place in the United States on that date, and that was without the 50-foot flag pole which rests on top of a major concrete block (if both are still there) on the highest peak of this 1,662 feet mountain.
    Hope to see you there.

Rotary Club news

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, June 22 at 6:30 at the Aroostook Health Center.
The special speaker was Dana Chasse of Mars Hill. He spoke of the Four Corners Bike Tour that he and four friends took recently. The tour gives motorcycle riders 21 days to travel to the four corner cities in the continental United States. They must send in verification from each city. Traveling with Chasse was Dana McQuade of Mars Hill, and Grady Tidd, Randy Lincoln and Ricky Tidd — all of Houlton.
The group left on April 11 and traveled from Madawaska to Key West, Fla. to San Ysidro, Calif. to Blaine, Wash. as the four corners tour cities. They did the tour in 15 days, and spent six more days driving home to Maine, arriving on May 1. They traveled anywhere from 350 to 770 miles each day, driving from around 8 a.m. until dusk. They traveled through 32 states and saw less than a half a day of rain. They did encounter some winds on their drive home.
Dana figures that he spent around $2,500 on the trip — $870 on gas (he averaged 42 mpg) and $739 on motels. The rest was spent on food and souvenirs — around $30 per day. They spent a day at Hoover Dam and enjoyed seeing Mount Rushmore on their way home.
Dana had a special task on the trip. He sent a postcard each day to the fourth-grade students in Miss Kimball and Mrs. Boyd’s classes at Fort Street Elementary School in Mars Hill. The students tracked their progress on a map, keeping track of the states traveled through, the weather, and the distance traveled.

Lemonade stand fund-raiser

This year’s Cropley family event held on June 12 at the Mars Hill IGA raised awareness and donations for pediatric cancer research started 10 years ago by Alexandra “Alex” Scott, a victim of pediatric cancer. The Cropleys’ 7th annual Alex’s Lemonade Stand raised $544 thanks to the support of the generous local sponsors.
In addition to the lemonade, this year’s event included a family-friendly raffle: two free greens fees certificates to the Mars Hill Country Club won by Kevin Grass and Mike Stiggle and two copies of Alex’s storybook won by Heidi Levesque and Ralph Long.
