PRESQUE ISLE – For the fifth consecutive year, Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 will host a free picnic for the public at Riverside Park on July Fourth. Activities will begin at 10 a.m. In the event of rain, all activities will occur Monday, July 5.

Presque Isle Elks will be serving grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, soft drinks, and ice cream to the public, all free of charge. A car show on Riverside Drive, musical entertainment in the park gazebo, Humvee rides, boat rides on the Presque Isle Stream, and children’s games with prizes awarded are planned again this year.
“A large segment of the Presque Isle community look forward to this July Fourth picnic,” said Elks Exalted Ruler Ernest Lovely. “It is an opportunity for everyone in our city to participate in a community-wide event, to enjoy our wonderful park along the river, and to collectively celebrate everything that makes this county so great.”
Lovely said the Elks’ free public picnic every July Fourth reflects the Elks’ motto, “Elks Care, Elks Share.”
As in previous years, the Maine Military Authority will offer rides in a Humvee, the Presque Isle Fire Department will conduct a demonstration of its equipment, and local musicians will provide live musical entertainment.
From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Riverside Drive, adjacent to the park, will be the site for a car show featuring antique and classic cars and pickups, as well as muscle cars, new cars, and vehicles of special interest. Registration is free, and all entrants receive a free T-shirt. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Trophies will be awarded for each class, as well as for best in show.
While parents enjoy a visit with their neighbors, children will be able to participate in organized games and contests with prizes awarded.
Attendance at the Elks’ annual Independence Day picnic has grown every year with approximately 1,500 people attending in 2009.
“Also increasing every year has been the number of members and volunteers who have contributed their time to put on this fun occasion for the community,” said Lovely.
Transportation, including transportation for wheelchair-bound individuals, to and from Riverside Park can be arranged by calling the Presque Isle Elks at 764-0985.
