MICHAEL JOHNSTON, right, from Troop E in Orono was honored recently as Maine’s Trooper of the Year. Johnston, a Presque Isle High School graduate, joined the State Police in 2002 and is an expert in drafting search warrants for him and other troopers. “Trooper Johnston is as enthusiastic as the day he came on, is a team player that other troopers rely on, and his personal story is an inspiration to others,” said Col. Fleming.  Johnston overcame a serious kidney disease while he was in college, thanks to a transplant from his older brother Mason.  While he was recuperating, Johnston memorized most of the state’s motor vehicle laws.  He lives in Hampden with his wife Betsy and their daughter, Annabelle. Ret. Maj. Charles Love from Winthrop, left, was named Legendary Trooper.  He retired in 2002 after a 32-year career which included several years serving in the Caribou area. Trooper Dan Dechaine, also of Troop F, was one of the Trooper of the Year nominees.
