Erin Randall makes like Superman in the long jump at last Tuesday’s Hershey Track and Field District Meet. The Caribou athlete, competing in the 11-12 year-old division, placed 10th with a mark of 65 inches.

More than 230 boys and girls from 13 towns converged on the Caribou High School track to vie for the chance to travel to the State Finals of this national program.
The Hershey Track and Field Program is a program designed to encourage fitness through simple running, throwing and jumping activities. Mazzuchelli noted that annually, the Hershey Foods Corporation brings over 500 young athletes and chaperones to the National Finals of the program in Hershey, Pennsylvania in August.
The youngsters that place first in their event at the state meet will be pooled with youngsters from other states and provinces in their region. The region will include Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
Although some youngsters might not have the best times or distances in the region, Mazzuchelli noted that Hershey requires a minimum of five delegates from every state and Canadian province in North America be represented at the finals. Mazzuchelli noted that over the years several Aroostook County youths have had the opportunity to enjoy the experience of the North American Finals.
The top four finishers from all the districts in Maine will converge on Cameron Stadium in Bangor on July 6 to vie for the top spot in their event.
At the district meet, three athletes took first-place in their age division in three events. Molly Anthony of the Mars Hill Recreation Department won the 11-12 girls division’s 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and standing long jump; Fort Kent’s Brandon Theriault won the 11-12 boys division’s 100-meter dash, softball throw and standing long jump; and Marissa Anthony of the Mars Hill Recreation Department won the 13-14 girls division’s 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and standing long jump.
