Northern Maine General
plans open house, career fair
EAGLE LAKE — On July 16, Northern Maine General will celebrate the construction of its new NMG Office facility with an open house. The new facility is located at 5 Carter Street in Eagle Lake, directly behind the site of the previous Central Office building.
The public is invited to attend the events scheduled throughout the afternoon.
The open house will begin at noon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. At 12:30 p.m., Northern Maine General’s Wellness Committee will serve a healthy cake and recognize winners of its recent Mega-Miles Walking Program. Tours of the office facility will begin at 1 p.m., with light refreshments served.
From 1-5 p.m., a Career Fair will be held in the training room at the new facility. At the fair, employees from the agency’s divisions will provide information on the employment opportunities at NMG. Current job openings can be seen at NMG’s website, nmgeneral.com.
The Career Fair is a chance for those who would like to consider part- or full-time work in social services to become familiar with the agency. NMG offers opportunities to individuals with a wide range of qualifications — from high school diplomas to master’s degrees — to work with children and adults.
Positions are available in locations in both the St. John Valley (Eagle Lake area) and the Caribou/Presque Isle area.
The new office facility was constructed as a result of money granted through Rural Development’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The building it replaces was a two-story building constructed in the early 1900s. At one time it served as the resident home for the Little Franciscan Sisters of Mary and later the Sisters of Mercy.
In 1996, after the last of the nuns moved from the area, and with a need for additional space, the building was converted into an office building.
While the original Central Office building served its purpose for many years, it presented challenges for office and program staff, employees and visitors. As a result, the Board of Trustees decided that building a new structure was more cost-effective than renovating and expanding the existing one.
Northern Maine General constructed a new single-story office building on a site directly behind the original building.
The new building has two separate wings — one that houses administrative staff and the other designed for program services.
The new space provides areas for employee training, conferences, meetings, job interviews, as well as office space. It is a fully accessible space that is safe and comfortable for visitors, clients and employees.
