David Dubois, a senior at Southern Aroostook Community School, was ranked 36th in the New England Junior Golf Championship held Aug. 17-18 at Abenaqui Country Club in Rye Beach, N.H.
“I played awful,” said Dubois. “All together, our Maine team didn’t play too well.”
Dubois, who was ranked fifth in the state, was one of seven 15-17-year-old golfers on the Maine team.
“The course was tough,” Dubois said of the junior championship. “We finished fifth out of six New England teams.”
The tournament was a 54-hole stroke play event, with 36 holes played on one day and 18 on the next. He shot a 79 and 87 on the opening day, and an 82 on the second.
“Everyone has their bad days,” he said. “I had a couple of off days.”
Before the tourney, Dubois shot a practice round of 74.
“I played solid,” he said. “It’s an extremely challenging course unlike any other I’ve played. The greens were 11 on the stimp (a meter used to measure the speed of a putting green) and very firm. The layout was great, but very challenging.”
Dubois continues to play, with his high school season starting next week.
“Since I’ve been back, I’ve been playing just like I was before the tournament,” he said. “I just went through a swing flaw. I’m pretty excited for high school States this year. I always push myself to do as well as possible.”
