Caverhill, Blackstone power Viking boys to blowout victory

The Caribou Vikings experienced victory for the first time since their season opener, thanks to a 9-0 drubbing of Mattanawcook Saturday. Caribou, fourth in the Heal Point standings for Eastern Maine Class B, takes a 2-3-2 record into tough road matches Thursday at Ellsworth and Saturday at Old Town.

Limestone-MSSM won for the first time last Tuesday, stopping Van Buren 2-1. The Eagles, now 1-7, are in 15th place in EM Class D.

Washburn is fourth at 7-3-1 and Fort Fairfield eighth at 3-5-1. All these teams are now off until early October due to the harvest recess.

Summaries of games played through Monday, Sept. 20 follow:

Caribou 9, Mattanawcook 0 – Chad Caverhill exploded for three goals and set up two others as the Vikings rolled past the Lynx in Caribou Saturday.

Ben Blackstone also scored twice and garnered a pair of assists for the winners, who improved to 2-3-2 and broke a five-game winless streak. Kevin Strid had two goals and Roland Thibodeau and Matt Milliard tallied one each. Garrett Jordan saved seven of nine shots for the win in goal.

Central Aroostook 7, Limestone-MSSM 0 – On Thursday in Limestone, the Panthers picked up the sweep in their season series against the Eagles behind two goals apiece by Kyle Murray, Brandon Anthony and Dan Brewer. Spencer Stetson scored the other CA goal and Ross Grass saved two of four shots for the shutout in goal.

Limestone-MSSM 2, Van Buren 1 – The Eagles scored a pair of first-half goals and held on to defeat Van Buren last Tuesday for their first victory of the season after opening with six consecutive losses.

Tristan Kirk scored a goal and assisted on another by Ben D’Haiti. Forsman had the win in goal with eight saves on 10 shots.

Caleb Roy scored a second-half goal for the Crusaders, while VB goalkeeper Mark LaJoie turned away six of 12 shots.
