For eight seasons, the Aroostook Huskies have brought a new concept — eight-on-eight football — to the County as part of the Aroostook Football league. Under the leadership of Stu Wyckoff, who guided the Aroostook Huskies (Presque Isle and Caribou) for all eight seasons, the Huskies are enjoying moderate success this season.

HIGH FLYING — Soaring into the air in an effort to intercept the ball is Huskie Tony Curtis during Saturday’s game against Milo played at Sincock Field in Caribou.

The Huskies (2-1) are riding a two-game win streak after their 83-0 shellacking of Milo Saturday. That win comes on the heels of a 34-6 victory over the Aroostook Mustangs (Madawaska) Sept. 11. The Huskies opened their season with a 41-6 loss to the Aroostook Knights, the defending league champs, of Houlton.

He is assisted by Ron Dalgo, who according to Wyckoff, is being groomed to take over as head coach of the Huskies when he eventually steps down. Dick Engels has also assisted with the program over the years.

Against Milo Saturday, in a game played at Sincock Field in Caribou, the Huskies were firing on all cylinders in an 83-0 shellacking of the visiting Panthers.

“We played very well against Milo this past weekend,” Wyckoff said. “This week we are preparing for BCH, who beat the Mustangs 25-18 this past weekend. Now that we have a win streak going, we need to work even harder to improve and not get complacent.”

The win was not without a price, however as the Huskies suffered a serious loss when starting quarterback Mike Poulin, a sophomore at Presque Isle High School, was lost for the season when he dislocated his hip in the game. Prior to the injury, Poulin effectively dissected the Panthers’ defense on numerous scoring drives.

“I know Mike is very disappointed and needs a lot of team support,” Wyckoff said. “He will probably welcome a lot of company. After he goes back to school, he will probably need a lot of help from his teammates at Presque Isle High School with carrying things while he is on crutches. Let’s all rally around him.”

The Huskies also lost one of their best young wide receivers, Cody Bryant, who opted to leave the team for personal reasons.

This year’s squad is young, but talented, according to its coach.

CRUSHING TACKLE — Tyler Grant of the Huskies puts a lick on Milo quarterback Derrick Johnson during Saturday’s game.

“We’re a young team, with only two seniors on the entire squad, and are looking to improve our skills and grow as people,” Wyckoff said.

“We have great potential to do well on the field if we work hard and come together as a team. Being so young, we might be a year away from real success, but everyone we play will know they’ve been in a battle. We are going to surprise a few people.”

The 2010 Huskies include: seniors Sean Cullinan and Codie Robbins; juniors Jordan Banks, Deion Caudill, Tyler Grant, Wes Holmes, Jordan Mitchell, Trevor Shemkovitz, Dylan Stevens and Trey Stewart;  sophomores Garrett DeLong, Scott DeLong, Cody Flannery, Jonathan Jividen, Zach Page, Mike Poulin and Allan White; and freshmen Tony Curtis, Chris Norris, Tyler Proulx, Stephen Schwartz, John Shemkovitz and Jason Soares.
