MARS HILL NEWS

by Tomi Henderson

There will be a benefit supper and auction for two-month-old Porter Ray Bell to help Mindy and Kramer with some of the hospital expenses incurred since his birth on July 14. He was born with intestinal complications and has had several surgeries.
The supper will be on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., with the auction to follow from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Central Aroostook High School. If you have items to donate for the auction, please contact Katie Bell, Betsy Allen, Lovena West, Megan Cronkite or Teri St. Pierre. There will be no charge for the dinner, but donations will be taken.

Rotary news

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, September 29 at the Aroostook Health Center.  The special speaker was Grant Spinney of the Presque Isle Fire Department. He spoke about the  Junior Firefighter Program, begun in 2003.  An average of 24 individuals participate each year. They must be at least 16 years of age to take the course, which runs for about three and a half months, from June to October.
In 2008, they expanded the program to surrounding communities and nine people from Mars Hill participated.  Spinney said about half of each year’s participants stay on as firefighters.

Craft fair

The annual Blaine Craft Fair, sponsored by St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, will be held on Nov. 6, beginning at 9 a.m. It will be held at the Mars Hill & Blaine Community Center. Anyone interested in participating in the Craft Fair is asked to contact Cherry at 429-9892. Any organizations wanting to sell baked goods are welcome also.

Bridgewater Historical Association

There will be a yard sale on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8 and 9, at the hall in Bridgewater. Don’t forget about the planned Halloween Dance on Oct. 30 also.

Where in the USA is Ray?

Ray and Judy Mersereau planned on heading for Florida until someone mentioned a great fiddler in Branson, Mo. Figuring it wouldn’t be more than 700 miles out of the way, they headed for Branson and enjoyed seeing several shows, including Shoji Tabuchi — the Japanese violinist they had heard about. He was even better than they had been told, and the theater itself was beautiful! Developers had spent over $2,000,000 on the bathrooms in the theater.  Judy was so impressed that she took photos of the bathrooms!
Other shows they enjoyed included The Legend of Kung Fu, The Spirit of the Dance and Bill Medley — one of the original Righteous Brothers. One special show that they will never forget was Dick Clark’s Legends in Concert, where they saw George Strait, the Blues Brothers, the Temptations, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn came into the audience and chose Ray to join her on stage. He sported several lipstick marks on his forehead by the time she was done with him!  Judy is still laughing about what Marilyn was able to do with the little hair that Ray has on his head!
Not left out, Elvis chose Judy to serenade and kiss. Ray claims that Judy still hasn’t washed her face!!

Tomi’s travels

We enjoyed our time in Florida, visiting the Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Hollywood Studios at Disney, as well as just spending time with my son and his family. The pool at the house we rented in Orlando was used a great deal by everyone. My grandson Ryan celebrated his second birthday while we were there and that was a fun time.
It seems like you run into people you know everywhere, and seeing Josh Tweedie at Disney was a nice surprise. He and Jenn and their family were spending the week at Disney also. They will return before I do, as I have more states to travel through and family to see on the way home.
