UMPI blows out Fisher

Owls win big over Fisher

    PRESQUE ISLE – The University of Maine at Presque Isle earned the 12-0 Sunrise Conference win against the Falcons of Fisher College Saturday at Park Family Field. All eight UMPI seniors scored on the day as they were also honored during the team’s senior day. With the win, the Owls move to 8-5 on the season and 6-3 in conference play. 

    Senior Joshua Peasee opened up scoring in the second minute of play, with the assist awarded to Craig Maffei with the heading pass. Senior Corey Fournier got in the mix in the fourth minute, scoring the first of his two goals with Maffei collecting his second of three assists on the day. He also tallied a goal in the 63rd minute.
    Senior Seth Dorr of Hodgdon found the back of the net in the eighth minute, converting off a pass from Joshua Peaslee. Devon Peaslee (33rd minute), Chris Smith (41st minute), Ben Costello (44th minute), Matt Carrington (56th minute) and Chad Parker (74th minute) were the other seniors tallying goals in the game to celebrate their four years as members of the men’s soccer team. Parker also added an assist in the win.
    First-year player Carl Nemer of Ashland scored a goal and had an assist, Kyle Corrigan of Caribou added a goal, Corey White of Easton tallied two assists and Luke Bartlett and Anup Prasai each earned one assist in the contest.
    Goalkeeper Joshua MacKinnon picked up the win by making just one save on one shot.
    The Owls return to action Saturday as they head to Vermont Technical College to face the Green Knights in an 11 a.m. conference match. The following day, UMPI will travel to the College of St. Joseph’s, also in Vermont, to take on the Saints in an 11 a.m. contest.

 UMPI women cruise to victory

    PRESQUE ISLE – The University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s soccer team earned a convincing 16-0 Sunrise Conference win over the Falcons of Fisher College Saturday at Park Family Field. With the win, the Lady Owls improved to 9-3 on the year and 6-2 in conference play.
    Freshman Susan Lavertu of Madawaska opened scoring on the day in the third minute of play, earning the first of her two goals in the game. Freshman Brooke Long, who played her high school soccer in Presque Isle, earned the assist on the play. Lavertu also tallied an assist in the UMPI win, while Long added three more assists and two goals on the day.
    On her special day, lone senior and captain Chelsea Boudreau tallied a goal in the 62nd minute of play and added two assists. Lainey Herring of Houlton scored a hat trick, with all three goals coming in the second half of play, while Desiree Smith and Carly Gillis both tallied two goals on the afternoon. Smith also added two assists, while Jennifer Ouellette of Van Buren, LeAnn Abbott, Elena Estrada and Carolynn Tuck each got into the mix of scoring in the game, adding one goal apiece to help their team. Tuck and Estrada also tallied assists for the Owls.
    Taylor Ussery earned the goalie win.
    The Owls return to action on Saturday as they make the trip to Vermont Technical College to face the Green Knights in a 1 p.m. conference match-up.

Owls compete in MMA meet

    CASTINE – The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Mariner Cross Country Invitational held in Castine Friday. The men’s team ran to a second-place finish, while the women had all four runners run strong on the day while not having enough competitors to figure in the team scoring.
    On the women’s side, the Eagles of Husson University ran to a first place finish. For the Owls, first-year runner, Carly Langley led her team with a fourth place finish in 18:09 on the 4K course. Senior Shelly Hanson crossed the line in 18:25, good enough for a seventh-place finish, while teammate and junior transfer Taylor-Jo Quint of Hodgdon earned a 15th-place finish in a time of 20:18. Rounding out the UMPI team was Alli Pizzuti of Caribou in a time of 22:23 for 18th place overall.
    In the men’s meet, Maine Maritime Academy earned the team win on the day through the 6K course. UMPI’s Zach Barnes of Presque Isle finished a solid ninth, crossing the line in 23:16. First-year runner Jaron Gray of Danforth continues to run strong, finishing with a time of 23:28, good enough for 11th place overall. Jesse Howard ran a great race with a 6:52 minute per mile pace. He came through in 14th place in 25:34. Senior Michael LeClair also ran an impressive race, finishing in a time of 25:52 in 16th place, while Richard Landry came through in 17th with a time of 26:02. Samuel Johnson rounded out the Owl team on the day, taking 18th place in 26:10.
    The Owls continue to work toward peak fitness as they gear up for the Sunrise Conference Championships, which are scheduled to be held on Saturday, Oct. 30 in Canton, N.Y. The women are set to start at 11 a.m., followed by the men at 11:45 a.m.

Owls fall twice in Fort Kent

    FORT KENT – The University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s volleyball team competed in the final Sunrise Conference tri-match of the season held at the University of Maine at Fort Kent Saturday. The Lady Owls lost both matches; the first to the Clippers of UMM 3-1 and the second to host Bengals, 3-0.
    In the first match of the afternoon, the Owls dropped a 3-1 decision to UM-Machias, 25-14, 20-25, 21-25, 21-25. Senior captain Megan Korhonen of Littleton led her UMPI team with 22 assists, four kills and two digs in the loss. Junior Karen Creighton had a solid game, tallying 13 kills and 10 digs, while Allison MacDonald added five kills and 13 digs. Amanda Moore helped out with six kills and five digs.
    In the second contest of the day, the Owls fell to host UM-Fort Kent, 3-0. The game scores were 13-25, 9-25 and 18-25. Creighton led her team with 13 digs and three kills in the defeat. MacDonald added four kills and eight digs, while Moore tallied two kills and nine digs.
