raising funds for Youth 2011

by Jennifer Buzza

Local students planning to attend Youth 2011 are hosting two Christmas shoppers’ childcare evenings (one in Mapleton and one in Washburn). We will watch your child(ren) in Mapleton and Washburn so that you can go do your last-minute Christmas shopping (maybe even dinner out)! We will provide supper, crafts and entertainment. Adult supervision will be provided. All we ask for is a donation for our trip to Youth 2011!

All money raised will help send the kids to Youth 2011 next summer. Youth 2011 is the national youth gathering for the United Methodist Church. It is an event that only happens every four years and is the largest single gathering of UMC youth in existence. This four-day conference will bring together top United Methodist leaders, as well as the best ecumenical speakers, bands and talent with thousands of youth from all around the nation.

Call Torry Eaton at 764-3762 (or e-mail to reserve your slot(s) in Mapleton at the Mapleton United Methodist Church from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 17 or call Lisa Reed at 493-0989 (or e-mail to reserve your slot(s) in Washburn at the Lidstone United Methodist Church from 4-9 p.m. Dec. 18.

Christmas church services

The West Chapman Advent Christian Church will be hosting its Sunday School Christmas program Sunday, Dec. 19 at 9:30 a.m. The program will include skits, readings, music and snacks. The public (as well as the family and friends of the Sunday School children) is welcome to attend. The adults of the church will be presenting a musical cantata entitled “A Christmas Story” during the morning service on the 19th also. That service will begin at 10:45 a.m.

Tree raffle

The Mapleton Ladies Extension is still selling tickets for its primitive country Christmas tree raffle. The items include a 5-foot tree with a real wood core, a wooden sleigh decoration, a Christmas book, a sleigh ride from Putnam’s in Mapleton, $10 gift certificates from The Mapleton Restaurant (2), The Pizza House and Graves’ Shop ‘n Save, a homemade log cabin-style quilted tree skirt, many tree decorations and much more. Tickets for the Christmas tree raffle are $1 each or 6 for $5.

The group decided that all proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets will be given to the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle. After tallying up all items to be raffled off, the total value of the tree is worth approximately $300. Anyone interested in purchasing tickets is asked to call Liz Brewer at 764-3427 (during the evenings) to make arrangements, or any of the extension members. The drawing will be Dec. 10.

Thank you!

The Northern Lights Youth Choir evening of fundraising at the State Road Advent Christian Church was a huge success! Between the auction, concessions and donations, nearly $5,000 was raised! Thank you to all the local businesses and individuals who contributed. Without your support, the evening would not have been as successful! A very special thanks to auctioneer Bert Winslow. Watch for the Choir’s spring concert tour schedule next year as they make plans to perform locally.

Mapleton United Methodist Church luncheon
