The official start of the winter season begins Friday night with a few hoop contests and a hockey game on tap in the area.
In basketball, the Hodgdon Hawks will host Katahdin at 7 p.m., while the Southern Aroostook boys will match up against Central Aroostook at 7 p.m. in Dyer Brook. Junior varsity games will be played prior to varsity contests at 5:30 p.m.
Also on Friday, the Greater Houlton Christian Academy girls and boys will play in Easton with the girls’ game starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ matchup at 7 p.m.
On the ice at the Millar Civic Center in Houlton, the Houlton-Hodgdon Black Hawks open their season with a home game against Gardiner at 1 p.m.
The Houlton Shiretowners hit the hardwood in Madawaska with a 2:30 p.m. game on Saturday, with the junior varsity playing at 1 p.m. The East Grand girls and boys teams travel to Easton for a 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. contest, with the junior varsity girls playing at 11 a.m. and the junior varsity boys playing at 12:30 p.m. Also, on Saturday, at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the Greater Houlton Christian Academy boys will host Van Buren in a 7 p.m. game.

Katahdin junior varsity and varsity boys at Schenck, 5:30/7 p.m.
Southern Aroostook junior varsity and varsity boys at Ashland, 5/6:30 p.m.
