Boys hoop season under way

The Presque Isle Wildcats and the Easton Bears are both off to 2-0 starts to begin the 2010-11 boys basketball season. PI opened with a hard-fought win at Hermon Saturday and followed that up with a triumph over Mattanawcook at home Monday. Easton edged GHCA at home Friday before easing past East Grand in another home contest the following afternoon.
Fort Fairfield was the last local team to get its regular season under way. The Tigers, last year’s Eastern Maine Class D runner-up, made the trip to Mars Hill last night to take on the CA Panthers.
Summaries of games played through Monday, Dec. 13 are as follows:
Presque Isle 63, Mattanawcook 46 – Travis Dyer scored 11 of his 27 points in the third quarter to help the host Wildcats defeat Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln Monday for their second win of the season without a loss.
Alex Tuttle had 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Wildcats. Oliver Zubrick scored 10 points and Wilder York had four steals.
Chase Vicaire paced the Lynx, which was playing their first game of the season, with 16 points.
GHCA 54, Ashland 38 – At the University of Maine at Presque Isle Monday, Micah Wiley and Ethan Holmes each scored 19 points to help power Greater Houlton Christian Academy past Ashland.
Wiley also grabbed 21 rebounds for the Eagles, who are now 2-1 on the campaign.
Kenny Tarr led the 0-2 Hornets with 20 points, while Jordan Beaulier contributed eight.
Presque Isle 48, Hermon 45 – At Hermon Saturday, Oliver Zubrick scored 16 points and Travis Dyer added 15 as the ’Cats held on for a season-opening victory in both squads’ debut.
The score was tied at halftime, but the Wildcats led by as many as eight points in the second half. However, Hermon rallied to take a one-point lead at 45-44 before Presque Isle scored the final four points of the game.
Freshman guard Tyler Thayer led Hermon with 16 points.
Easton 90, East Grand 9 – At Easton Saturday, Reid Clark scored 22 points in leading Easton past East Grand of Danforth.
Jared Hafford had 12 points for the winners, while Garrett Gray scored 11 points and Jonah Bacon added 10 points.
Washburn 96, Ashland 34 – On Friday at Ashland, Jordan McLaughlin scored 26 points as Washburn easily got past Ashland in the first game played at the new Ashland District School Gymnasium

Mitch Worcester had 22 points for the Beavers, who put up 35 points in the opening quarter thanks to an effective fullcourt press and accurate shooting from the floor. Chase Chandler added 10 points for Washburn.
Tarr, who made history by scoring the game’s first basket, had 15 points to pace the Hornets.
Central Aroostook 69, Southern Aroostook 56 – The Panthers had a successful regular-season debut on the road Friday as Caleb Kelly scored 20 points to lead four Central Aroostook players in double figures in posting the win over the Warriors in Dyer Brook.
Brendan York scored 17 points for the Panthers, while Mike McClung tallied 14 and Logan McLaughlin added 12.
Cody Robinson led the Warriors with 24 points.
Easton 64, GHCA 62 – At Easton Friday, Clark led three Easton players in double figures with 17 points as the Bears held off Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
Holden Turner added 16 points and Cody Tompkins 12 for the winners.
Wiley had 18 points and Holmes 17 for GHCA.
