WADE — Slippery road conditions were blamed for a single-vehicle accident on Dec. 11, along a section of Route 228.
The Maine State Police were notified of the crash around 1:35 p.m., with Trooper Fred Thomas responding to investigate.
“A station wagon driven by Nicholas Pignatiello, 19, of Perham, was traveling south on the Perham Road when the operator came up on a tractor trailer preparing to make a turn heading toward Wade. Pignatiello applied his brakes but the road was slippery and he lost control, striking and breaking off a utility pole,” said Thomas.

SLIPPERY ROAD CONDITIONS were blamed for an accident Saturday on the Perham Road in Wade. Nicholas Pignatiello lost control of his station wagon, striking a utility pole and coming to rest under a stand of trees. He and his passenger, a juvenile female, sustained minor injuries.
Pignatiello and an unidentified juvenile passenger were both wearing seatbelts and sustained only minor injuries as the result of the crash.
“The airbags also deployed. The passenger, a 16-year-old female, was transported by Caribou Fire and Ambulance to Cary Medical Center for treatment of minor bumps and bruises. Pignatiello did not require treatment,” Thomas said.
“Pignatiello’s vehicle, a 1997 Ford station wagon, sustained extensive damage — enough that I’d say it’s a total loss,” added Thomas.
White’s Service of Washburn towed the vehicle. Washburn Fire Department and first responders, as well as Crown Ambulance, also assisted at the scene. Maine Public Service was contacted to replace the pole.
