Lady Owls drop two on weekend

The University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s basketball team fell to the UM-Farmington 67-46 Sunday in a non-conference game played at Dearborn Gymnasium in Farmington.

 

UMF used hot shooting from behind the arc to pick up its second win of the season. The Lady Beavers drained 11 three-pointers in the game and also finished 16 of 20 from the foul line.

With the loss, the Lady Owls fell to 1-6 on the season.

Sophomore Emily Pelletier led UMPI with 11 points, shooting 3-for-7 from three-point land, while senior Megan Korhonen added nine points, four rebounds and two steals in the defeat. Junior Emily Moore dished out a season-high five assists.

In Waterville Saturday, the Owls were on the wrong side of a 71-37 score against Colby College. Colby’s Jil Vaughan shot 9 for 10 from the field to finish with a game-high 18 points. She also had a team-high nine rebounds in leading the Mules to their sixth win of the year.

Rashell Saucier led the Owls with 11 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. Korhonen added eight points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Pelletier had six points for UMPI.

The Owls next play Saturday, Dec. 18 as they open up their home season with a 1 p.m. game against Eastern Maine Community College. On Sunday, Dec. 19, the Owls host the University of Maine at Augusta for a 1 p.m. tip-off.

Owl men still looking for first hoop victory

The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team fell to 0-7 on the season after losing 69-56 to UM-Farmington Sunday.

The host Beavers used an 18-2 opening run in the first 6:37 of the contest to grab a commanding lead.

UMPI cut the lead to nine points on two occasions in the second half, but could not get any closer.

Cliff McDonald led the Owls with 17 points and six rebounds. Teammate Patrick Manifold added seven points and three rebounds for UMPI, while Gerado Vasquez tallied nine points, six rebounds and two assists. Devon Peaslee chipped in with eight points and three boards.

The Owls fell in overtime to Maine Maritime Academy at home Saturday, 76-72. McDonald led all scorers on the day, earning his third double-double of the season with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Manifold tallied 18 points in the game and dominated on the glass, pulling down 12 rebounds. Kyle Corrigan dished out seven assists and added 11 points, six rebounds and five steals. Peaslee pulled down eight rebounds.

A tribute was held prior to Saturday’s game to honor 1st Lt. James R. Zimmerman, a Marine who was killed in action recently in Afghanistan. Lt. Zimmerman, a native of Aroostook County, was a member of UMPI head coach Terry Cummings’ boys varsity basketball team during Cummings time at Greater Houlton Christian Academy.

The Owls return to action on Saturday, Dec. 18 as they host Eastern Maine Community College for a 3 p.m. home contest. On Sunday, Dec. 19, UMPI will host the University of Maine at Augusta, also at 3 p.m.
