Congressman’s vote for equality, justice

To the editor:

Bravo to Representative Mike Michaud for standing firm and opposing the tax-cut deal that takes from the poor and gives to the rich. According to David Kocieniewski, “The only groups likely to face a tax increase [with the tax-cut deal] are those near the bottom of the income scale — individuals who make less than $20,000 and families with earnings below $40,000.” (New York Times 12-08-2010). This means that the number of people that are affected by tax increases is near 100 million (US Census Report, american progress.org).

Consider the sacrifice the struggling poor are expected to make to satisfy the greed of the top 2 to 3 percent of the population. Furthermore, the deal does nothing to decrease the deficit, nor does it create any jobs which will create further suffering for the struggling poor.

Consider what kind of priorities are guiding these decisions. And then, tell Rep. Michaud thanks for his courageous vote, and urge him to keep up the fight for the American promise of equality and justice for all.
