Korhonen gains honor

    PRESQUE ISLE – Several student-athletes from the University of Maine at Presque Isle were recently honored by the NCAA Division III Independent Conference for their outstanding play during their respective sport seasons.
  The following athletes were selected to the 2010 All-Independent Conference teams:
 Men’s cross country running: Justin Fereshetian (junior from Turner), second team.

 Women cross country running: Kati Christoffel (sophomore from Clifton Park, N.Y.) – honorable mention; Shelly Hanson (senior from Charleston) – honorable mention.
    Men’s soccer: Devon Peaslee (senior from Woolwich), first team forward; Craig Maffei (junior from Readfield), first team midfield; Matt Carrington (senior from Nottingham, United Kingdom), first team forward; Josh Peaslee (senior from Woolwich), second team midfield.
    Women’s soccer: Brooke Long (freshman from Mannheim, Germany), first team defender; Desiree Smith (junior from Thomaston), second team forward; Chelsea Boudreau (senior from Wallace, Nova Scotia), second team midfield.
    Volleyball: Megan Korhonen (senior from Littleton), honorable mention setter; Amanda Moore (freshman from Seattle, Wash.), honorable mention outside hitter; Karen Creighton (junior from Sussex, New Brunswick), honorable mention middle blocker.   
    The Association of Division III Independents consists of 13 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition.
    The association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis and provides statistical services for its members in seven sports.
    In addition, it will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of eight other sports this year.
