On Tuesday, Jan. 18, reservations will be available for Baxter State Park’s 2011 camping season. On Jan. 18 only, campers can make a maximum of two reservations for any period during the May 15 to Oct. 15 camping season. The park limits opening day reservations to a maximum of 20 percent of any campground on any day. Campers can make reservations on a first come-first served basis. Doors will open at park headquarters at 7 a.m. and the reservation office will begin reservations by 8 a.m.
On Wednesday, Jan. 19, the park will shift to the rolling reservation system with lean-tos, tent sites, and cabins becoming available for reservation 120 days prior to the reservation date.
In 2010, the park opened two new lean-tos on Katahdin Lake. The park is planning the construction of a day shelter at Chimney Pond in 2011. The park also expects to launch limited on-line reservations in 2011, allowing campers making a reservation within two weeks of their intended arrival date to reserve sites at eight of the Park’s ten organized campgrounds.
