Rilla was born on March 23, 1927, in Castle Hill, the daughter of the late Thomas and Queenie (Jenkins) Porter.
In 1957, Rilla and her family sold their farm in Maine and moved to Connecticut. Rilla lived the majority of her life in Vernon. She also resided in Stafford, Tolland, and South Windsor. When Rilla’s children were younger, Rilla worked part time at W.T. Grants, was a census taker, and she also managed a Green Stamps store. Rilla later worked full time for many years at Pratt & Whitney before retiring early to care for her elderly mother. Rilla also was a real estate agent for Double Dutch Realty of Tolland.
Rilla is survived by a son, Robert L. Browning and his wife, Arlene of Springfield, MA; three daughters and sons-in-law: Linda and Alan Hunter of South Windsor, Diana and Peter Burnham of Manchester, and Annette Browning of South Windsor. She also leaves four grandsons: Brian Hunter and his wife, Lisa of South Windsor, Robert Browning, Jr. of Springfield, MA, Ronald Browning, and Richard Browning and his wife, Samantha of Agawam, MA; and three adored great-granddaughters: Katelyn and Nicole Hunter, and Britiany Browning. Rilla also leaves two sisters-in-law: Marjorie Porter of Bridgewater, ME, and Helen Porter of Dade City, FL; one foster sister, Joann Paradis, of Enfield; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Rilla was predeceased by her four brothers: Franklin, Ray, Vincent, and Alvin and his wife, Rowena; and one foster sister, Lois Durost.
Rilla was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved visiting her many relatives in Maine, Florida, and Canada. Rilla also enjoyed going on trips with the Senior Citizens. She loved going shopping and eating out at her favorite restaurants, especially the ones that served carrot cake, strawberry shortcake, and butterscotch sundaes.
Rilla’s family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Buckingham Estates for the kind and compassionate care they provided for Rilla the past three years. They would also like to thank Masonicare Hospice for their support and additional care of Rilla in her final weeks at Buckingham.
