The Houlton 5-6 grade girls Aroostook Youth Basketball League team captured the Orono-Veazie Classic title last weekend.
The Houlton girls played against teams from Hampden, Ellsworth, Winslow, Calais, Brewer, Waterville and Caravel.
In their first game of Pool Play, the Houlton girls defeated Waterville, 33-7.
Scoring for Houlton were: Kolleen Bouchard, nine points; Kristen Graham, eight; Abby Schools, five; Aspen Flewelling, four; Rebecca Mooers, Emma Peterson and Alexis Miller, two points each and Carolyn Mooers a point.
In the second Pool Play game, Houlton toppled Carmel, 48-28.
Houlton was led in scoring by Graham with a game-high 25 points, followed by Bouchard and Flewelling with six each. Peterson added four, while Schools, R. Mooers and Miller all had two points.
In their third Pool Play game, Houlton took a 37-13 win over Brewer.
Bouchard had 13 points, while Graham netted 10; Flewelling, eight; Schools, R. Mooers and Miller each chipped in with two points.
The young Lady Shires moved into the quarterfinal round of the tournament where they picked up a 49-19 triumph over Calais.
Leading a balanced scoring attack was Bouchard with 10, followed by Graham with nine; Flewelling and Miller with eight each; R. Mooers with six and Schools and Victoria Holmes both finished with four.
In the semifinals, Houlton overtook Winslow, 29-15 behind Graham’s 10; Bouchard’s eight; Flewelling’s seven, along with R. Mooers and Holmes two points each.
Graham and Flewelling led Houlton in the championship game with 16 and 13 points, respectively, as they defeated Hampden, 42-19.
Bouchard finished with six, while R. Mooers had four; C. Mooers, two and Holmes, one.
The Houlton girls were runners-up in the East Millinocket Tournament.
In the championship game, Houlton lost to Newport, 34-21.
Newport led 9-6 to start the game and 18-11 at halftime. In the third, Newport extended their lead to 28-17.
Leading scorer for Houlton was Graham with eight points, while Holmes scored six and was named Player of the Game. Bouchard finished with five and R. Mooers, two.
In the team’s opening game, they lost to Lincoln, 31-24.
The Houlton girls trailed 11-7 at halftime and 23-19 after three quarters of play.
Bouchard paced Houlton’s offense with 12 points, while Graham netted six; Flewelling, four points and Mooers, two more. Mooers was also named Player of the Game.
The Houlton girls came back in the their second game, building a 20-4 halftime cushion over Caribou en route to a 36-21 victory.
Graham earned Player of the Game with 12 points; Flewelling scored six; Bouchard, five; Sarah Delano added four; Schools and Miller each had three points; Peterson chipped in with two points and Holmes a point.
In their next game, Houlton picked up a 40-30 win over East Millinocket.
The Houlton girls jumped to a 14-5 opening lead and held a 27-9 halftime advantage. The East Millinocket girls outscored Houlton, 13-6 in the third, but Houlton stayed on top, 33-22.
Bouchard had a game-high 20 points for Houlton and was named Player of the Game, while Graham netted 13 and Flewelling added seven more.
The Houlton girls continued their winning ways, as they defeated Millinocket, 30-23.
The game was played closely, with Houlton trailing 14-10 at halftime. In the third, Houlton outscored Millinocket 12-4 to take a 22-18 advantage.
Bouchard led Houlton’s offense with 12 points, while Flewelling tossed in 10. Graham and Holmes each scored four points, while Delano added two more for the winners.
In their fifth game of the tournament, Houlton upended Lincoln, 39-27.
The Houlton girls led 11-8 to start the game and held a 23-15 halftime advantage. After three, Houlton remained on top, 29-17. The teams played evenly through the fourth, as both teams scored 10 points.
Graham was Houlton’s top scorer with 20 points, while Bouchard pumped in 13. Holmes, Carolyn Mooers and Miller each had two points. Earning Player of the Game honors was Flewelling.
