HOULTON – John Frederick “Fred” Longstaff, 94, Houlton, formerly of Bristol, Connecticut, and Knoxford, NB, went home to be with the Lord March 18, 2011. Born in Knoxford, N.B., in 1916, he was the eldest son of the late Trueman and Florence (Bishop) Longstaff.
John (Fred), spent his early years raising potatoes on his farm in Knoxford, then moved to Bristol, Connecticut, in 1969, where he worked in construction, lumber sales and automotives until the passing of his wife. He then returned to Houlton where he enjoyed his later years.
He is survived by son, Verdell of Truro, N.S.; grandchildren, LaDericka and her husband, Arthur Sewell, and Lindsey Longstaff, both of Houlton; great-grandchildren Aaron and Kelsey Sewell; sister, Jeanne and her husband, Claude Bartley, Portland; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and friend, Doris Scott of Centreville, N.B. John was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Helen Rustene (Shaw) Longstaff in 1997; sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and Ernest Emery; brother and sister-in-law, Earle and Marjorie Longstaff; nephews, Everett Longstaff, Larry and Brian Emery.
Visitation will be held on March 23 from 1 -2 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m., both in Carleton Funeral Home, 337 Lockhart Mill Rd., Jacksonville, N.B., with Rev. Andrew DeRier officiating. A private family committal following cremation will occur at the convenience of the family in the Upper Knoxford Cemetery.
