In support of Sgt. Seeley

To the editor:

What a slap in the face. After three months of call-back interviews and jumping through hoops, our town manager and his colleagues have chosen a new police chief. One from away; not one of our police officers was deemed qualified to lead a force they know inside and out. Not one of them, who have spent years on the force, know the area and the people, was qualified. That is a sham.

One officer, Sgt. Seeley, in particular, is more than qualified. He is a graduate of the FBI Academy, holds his master’s degree, teaches at the Police Academy and is always striving to better himself and the force. He has organized the Torch Run, worked with Special Olympics, even was chosen to go to Japan to represent Maine at the World Special Olympics. He has written grants to bring needed finances that the force could utilize, goes in the schools to visit so children know a friendly face in uniform and participates in activities with the senior citizens to help them. A lot of this is done on his own time. He is a caring, concerned officer who would have used his expertise to better our city. Now, it seems, he will not receive that chance.

One can only hope he will continue to be a part of our community.
