Coffin earns pitching win for UMPI softball
Softball team splits with MMA
The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team is now 4-7 on the season after winning a game and losing the other in a doubleheader against Maine Maritime Academy held Saturday at the Mahaney Dome on the University of Maine at Orono campus.
The Owls won game one in eight innings, 6-5. In the top of the eighth, Carolynn Tuck was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to break a 4-4 tie and give UMPI the lead. Desiree Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Owls up by two. MMA scored a run in the bottom of the inning, but fell short.
Krista Coffin of Presque Isle went all eight innings on the mound and walked just two batters while surrendering 12 hits in recording the pitching victory. Tuck went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Lainey Herring of Houlton and Kathleen Higgins both added two hits.
UMPI dropped game two, 6-1, with the Mariners scoring all of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Owls scored their lone run in the top of the sixth as Herring doubled, advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on a single off the bat of Danielle Humphrey, who ended the game by going 3 for 3. Megan Korhonen of Littleton contributed a double. Emily Moore was handed the pitching loss, striking out three and giving up 10 hits in the complete-game performance.
The Owls return to the Mahaney Dome for their next games, to be played April 1 against Husson University beginning at 3 p.m.
Baseball team garners first victory
The Owl baseball team reached the victory column for the first time after starting off with an 0-8 record. UMPI dominated Penn State-Worthington on Sunday, 19-0, in a game played in Scranton, Pa.
Jordan Perry of Baileyville fanned 11 batters in his seven innings of work and allowed just one hit on the afternoon. The Owls played error-free defense behind Perry, while the offense came through with 21 hits in the contest.
Carlos Villoria led the way by going 3 for 4 with four runs scored and an RBI. Seth Cote had two hits and four RBIs and Andrew Carter notched a pair of hits and two RBIs. Corey Harding went 3 for 3 with two RBIs, while Stephen Thorne had three hits and Matt Nadeau two for the winners.
The previous afternoon, in a game played at Wilkes-Barre, Pa, UMPI lost to King’s College, 6-3. Ted Walker of Caribou and Andrew Carter both singled and scored runs in the Owls’ half of the fourth, while Alex Csiernik doubled in one of the runs and also came across as UMPI built a 3-1 lead.
However, King’s College battled back by tying the game in the fifth and moving ahead with two more runs in the sixth and a single tally in the seventh.
Jake Fillebrown was the losing pitcher, striking out eight in his seven-inning stint and surrendering 10 hits. Anthony Batchelder pitched a scoreless eighth for UMPI.
Carter had three hits and Cap Morrell two for the Owls, who continue with their Pennsylvania-New York swing through Saturday before returning to campus.
