Sorority meets

The February meeting of Beta Sigma Phi, Preceptor Alpha Chapter, was held at the home of Ann LaPlant with 10 members present. President Paula Flora brought the meeting to order after the opening ritual. Several sisters were informed they were eligible for the masters level and a future ritual was discussed.

It was suggested that the art show on the first Friday of April would make a nice social evening.

After the meeting, cares & shares were exchanged and a delicious brunch was enjoyed by all. A Valentine Yankee Swap was held, leaving every sister more than delighted with their new gift.

Scholarship donation made

The Maine Epsilon Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met March 17 at the home of Tammy Walton, with 18 members present. Following the opening ritual, secretary, treasurer, and committee reports were given.

It was reported the items collected last meeting had been delivered to the homeless shelter. The group voted to donate to the D.J. Van Fund and the Larry Cowett Scholarship Fund. Kathy Swanson raffle tickets were available. Wishes were sent to and from member Barb Hews. The Founder’s Day 80th Anniversary of Beta Sigma Phi Banquet will be held April 28 at the Loring Job Corps in Limestone. The group voted for the Girl of the Year, to be announced at the Banquet.

Betsy Fitzherbert reported on the Scholarship Pageant being held April 30. Members volunteered to provide refreshments for the tea at the Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library being held the afternoon of the pageant.

Nominations/acceptances from the floor filled the selection of officers for the coming year.

Discussion was held on donating to the Japan disaster. With more information coming, this will be done next meeting.

Happy Dollars were enjoyed. The 50/50 raffle was won by Judy Kenney. Refreshments were provided by Wilma Cambridge, Jane Crouse and Linda Swett. The next meeting will be held April 21 at the home of Dolores Hutchins.

Business workshop

PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Orono’s Knowledge Transfer Alliance will host a free Business Management Workshop on Thursday, March 24, at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Aaron Hoshide from the University of Maine at Orono School of Economics and Senthil Sockalingam from the Knowledge Transfer Alliance will educate attendees on building budgets and record keeping using Excel, as well as the ins and outs of Quickbooks. The workshops will extend from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. with an hour lunch break from 12 to 1 p.m. and individuals are encouraged to bring their own lunch. Registration for the workshops is not required; however, those interested in attending are asked to e-mail Aaron Hoshide at aaron.hoshide@umit.maine.edu for more information.
