GIRL SCOUTS from Mapleton and Presque Isle took part in Girl Scout Sunday March 13 by attending the morning worship service at Grant Memorial United Methodist Church in Presque Isle. The girls greeted parishioners, helped hand out bulletins, began the service with a flag processional, saluted the American flag and recited the Girl Scout Promise. During the service, they sang “Make New Friends” and helped collect the morning’s offering. Attending were girls from Mapleton Brownie Troop 1133, Presque Isle Daisy and Brownie Troop 1137, one Junior from Presque Isle Troop 1178, and one Cadette from Presque Isle Troop 677. Pictured are, from left, front row: Alexus LaFerriere (1133), Amelia Dyer (1137), Madyson Wark (1137), Courtney Harding (1137), Sydney Robichaud (1133), Amanda Winslow (1133), Delaney Alward (1133) and Madelyn Buzza (1133). Back row: Josalyn Wark (1137), Elizabeth Dyer (1178), Stephanie Winslow (677), Katelyn Amero (1133) and Jenna Mountain (1133).

Troop members were introduced, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The girls recited the Girl Scout Promise then took turns reciting each of the 10 Girl Scout Laws.

In the troop’s tradition, each year they select a country to study in honor of Girl Scout Thinking Day. Last year, the troop studied India and the year before, Mexico. This year, the girls learned about one of the four Girl Scout World Centers, Our Chalet, in Switzerland. Each of the girls, with the help of their families, researched one area of the country and presented it to the troop during the Feb. 19 celebration, then again at the ceremony. Topics studied included Switzerland’s cuisine, tourist attractions, population, languages, holidays, currency, traditional clothing, games, the country’s flag and the story of “Heidi.”

Special guest, Deno Aegrter, of Crouseville, was introduced and thanked for sharing her family’s souvenirs and memorabilia from Switzerland. Mrs. Aegrter and her family lived in Switzerland for over 20 years and she generously allowed the girls to study pictures, books, maps, flags and currency her family collected during their years in the country. Ironically, in her collection, she had a scouting patch from Switzerland that said, “Historically Speaking, Switzerland,” almost identical to the patches the girls received at the ceremony!

During the awards presentation, each Scout was given a small paper flag replicating the country of Switzerland which displayed the patches and pins each earned. Girls in the entire troop earned several patches for various events and activities including a scrapbooking workshop with the mothers, Christmas caroling and pizza party, Cookie Rally, “Be a Reader,” Thinking Day 2011, Planet Head Day, annual cookie sale, Lowe’s workshop with family members, and Girl Scout Sunday. Several of the girls earned Try-Its together as a troop including Making Music, Manners, Brownie Girl Scouts Through the Years, Healthy Habits, Cookies Count, People of the World, Playing Around the World, and Point, Click and Go. Some of the girls worked on their own at home to earn Try-Its too including Delaney Alward, Katelyn Amero, Madelyn Buzza, Alexis Getchell, Jenna Mountain and Amanda Winslow.

Three troop members were awarded top cookie seller patches. Katelyn Amero sold 360 boxes, Amanda Winslow sold 384 boxes and Madelyn Buzza sold 432 boxes. As a troop, the girls sold 2,124 boxes of cookies, 117 of those were ordered by customers to donate to the Homeless Shelter in Presque Isle.

Several families received their Family Star Patch. This is a patch program sponsored by the Girl Scout Council of Maine to increase adult involvement with troops. The girls earned the silver star patch and the mothers received certificates of appreciation for providing transportation for a troop outing, assisting with a troop activity, volunteering at troop meetings, accompanying the troop on an outing, or by being a troop leader. Girls receiving a silver star and mothers receiving certificates were Delaney Alward and her mother, Wendy Maple; Katelyn Amero and her mother, Laurie Amero; Sydney Robichaud and her mother, Jennifer Robichaud; Amanda Winslow and her mother, Nancy Winslow; and Madelyn Buzza and her mother, Jennifer Buzza.

At the March 5 meeting, the girls each invited a family member to participate in the Lowe’s Build and Grow workshop. Pictures were taken of each of the girls with their mother or father and were framed so each of the girls could present them during the ceremony. Presenting frames were Delaney Alward to her father, David Alward; Katelyn Amero to her father, Scott Amero; Madelyn Buzza to her father, Aaron Buzza; Alexis Getchell to her father, Rick Getchell; Alexus LaFerriere to her mother, Daveena Waugh; Jenna Mountain to her father, Dennis Mountain; Sydney Robichaud to her mother, Jennifer Robichaud; and Amanda Winslow to her father, Willie Winslow.

To conclude the ceremony, the girls sang a new (silly) song they recently learned, called “Alice Camel.” Families and friends were all invited downstairs after the ceremony to enjoy a piece of cake, which was decorated to look like the flag of Switzerland.

Troop 1133 members are Delaney Alward, Katelyn Amero, Bethany Baker, Madelyn Buzza, Alexis Getchell, Alexus LaFerriere, Jenna Mountain, Sydney Robichaud, Rebecca Rider, and Amanda Winslow. The troop is led by Jennifer Buzza and Nancy Winslow.
