MAPLETON NEWS
by Jennifer Buzza
On Saturday, May 7th, the 49th annual Mapleton Lions Club auction will be held.
The auction will start at 6 p.m. The auction, as in the past, will be held at the Mapleton Lions Hall. There are hundreds of donated items and services that will be auctioned that evening.
This annual event is the major fundraiser for the charities supported by the Lions Club. Club members invite everyone to attend the auction which will follow a public ham and bean supper at the Mapleton Lions Hall. Dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and the auction will begin at 6 p.m.
Some of the Club’s proceeds from the supper and auction will support local organizations including Project Graduation, Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp, Mapleton Boy and Cub Scouts and the Mapleton Recreation Department. Each year the Club hangs the Christmas lights along Main Street and the Club bears the expense of the electricity used keep the lights on. The Lions conduct the annual Memorial Remembrance Day Ceremony for our Mapleton, Chapman and Castile Hill veterans at the Mapleton Elementary School following the Club’s annual Memorial Day Parade.
The Club also helps individuals with little income to purchase eyeglasses. In the 1920s, Helen Keller asked Lions Club International to become the “Knights for the Blind.” Mapleton Lions continue in this tradition by collecting used eyeglasses that are recycled for Third World countries.
The Mapleton Lions Club Auction is first of its two major fund-raising projects for these purposes. In June, the Mapleton Lions Club will host the Lions Club Annual Chicken Bar-B-Q as the kick-off event of Mapleton Daze which the Club sponsors. The Club also sponsors the Maple Meadow Farm Festival that will take place the same weekend as Mapleton Daze.
All of these events are made possible by the generous support of our neighbors and businesses in central Aroostook area. The public is encouraged to attend one or both of these events. We look forward to seeing everyone at these events.

Penny Crusade
Penny Crusade has begun at the West Chapman Advent Christian Church! This enjoyable eight-week time is set aside to raise awareness and funds for our missionaries, local and abroad. The theme for this year is ‘Fertile Ground’. Two teams have been established — the Sunbeams and the Raindrops (both essential items from God to ensure a bountiful harvest from the “fertile ground”).
Each week parishioners are challenged in different ways and given memory verses to ensure our lives are fertile ground for God. Everyone is encouraged to come and join in the fun! Church services are held at 10:45 a.m.
Spaghetti Supper
The Mapleton Baptist Youth will be holding a spaghetti supper on Saturday, April 23rd from 5:00-7:00 pm at the church. During the supper there will be items to bid on at the silent auction. In addition, those attending are asked to donate their bottles and cans by dropping them off at the church during the meal. Proceeds from the supper, auction and bottle drive will assist the youth as they plan for an upcoming trip this summer.

The public is encouraged to share favorite recipes for this publication. Please feel free to submit as many recipes as you choose.

Save your pennies!
Mapleton Elementary School will be kicking off their annual penny drive for the Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C-A-N-C-E-R) golf tournament beginning Monday, April 25th. Students and staff will be collecting their pennies (and other change and bills) as a fundraiser to sponsor a hole at the C-A-N-C-E-R golf tournament. The tournament is a fundraiser to help those in treatment for cancer in our area and will be held June 4th at the Presque Isle Country Club. Donations will be collected until May 20th.
Last year the school contributed $700 to the golf tournament, 100 percent of the funds raised went to help patients going through treatment. The school sponsored a hole and sent two teams to participate in the tournament. Anyone wishing to make a donation can stop by the school’s front office.
