100 Years Ago-May 3, 1911
Aroostook Times

   Telegraph — Harris McIntyre, son of Supt. B.B. McIntyre, has just completed a wireless telegraph outfit with a 60 foot high aerial and has interested several of his playmates in the work, so that there is now in working order three wireless stations in town and the boys are sending and receiving messages with much success.
    Business — Work on the new Woolen Mill will commence at once and when completed will be a great addition to Houlton industries.

75 Years Ago-April 30, 1936

   Unusual case — An 82-year-old Monticello woman was stricken at home with an attack of strangulated hernia. Her condition so serious transportation to the hospital was too dangerous. The only alternative was to carry proper hospital equipment to her home. The operation was performed soon after midnight with three physicians and three nurses in attendance. She is showing steady improvement.
   New store — The Great A. and P. Tea Co. will open one of the latest type combination stores, May 1st in the Putnam Block, Market Square. The meat department will be in charge of Mr. Arthur Tidd, who will be assisted by Mr. Clayton Niles.
R.C.I. — The students were much gratified over the success of Alta Estabrook ’37 in the winning of the Spear Contest at Houlton. Linwood Hand was the speaker at the student chapel. His subject was “Poverty” and Ardellis Oakes, ’38 read a poem entitled “The Little Matters.”

50 Years Ago- May 4, 1961

Houlton — At least 37 of 39 establishments signed agreements to follow the plan of Houlton’s Retail Board and remain open for business on Friday evening and close at 6 p.m. on Saturday, beginning June 2nd.
   Golf Club — A new membership drive is currently under way at the Houlton Community Golf Club. The 1961 rates are as follows: family membership, two or more persons, $60; single males, $35; single females, $25; married woman, husband not playing, but entitled to social privileges, $35. Green fees, week days, $2. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, $3.
    Littleton — Dana Wright and Sheila Campbell, seventh grade students at Littleton Consolidated School were crowned king and queen during the Littleton PTA Fair. Principal Elwood Scott crowned the pair.
  Monticello — Mrs. Arnold Good entertained the following dinner guests, Miss Joyce Henderson of Connecticut, Miss Elouise Hillman of Houlton, Miss Betty Anderson, Mrs. Bernard Anderson, Mrs. Clinton Wright of Littleton and Mrs. Garth Folsom and Mrs. Ronald McCluskey of Monticello. A social evening was spent.

   County sheriff — Edgar Wheeler, 44, a resident of Bridgewater, has announced his bid for re-election for the office of Aroostook County Sheriff in the Democratic June primary.
  Linneus — David Wittner, Town Manager said he has received a letter from the State Planning Office saying that the town of Linneus has been awarded a Community Development Block Grant of $221,000.
   Houlton — Ralph Cleale, who for the past several years has been Superintendent of Houlton’s Department of Public Works, will serve as acting Town Manager until a replacement is found for Philip McCarthy.
    Dunn’s — The new furniture store is now open on the North Road. Now everything at Dunn Furniture will be stored under one roof. The old wooden warehouses will be closed and sold or torn down. An era is coming to an end.
