PRESQUE ISLE — Despite bad weather, organizers were pleased with the results of a recent fundraiser for D.J. Murphy, a local man who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

The dance, which was held at the Crow’s Nest, raised funds that will be used to purchase a handicap-accessible van for Murphy.

“In spite of the heavy snowfall on April 1, the benefit dance for D.J. Murphy was a great success. A big thank-you to Steve and Lucy Richard for arranging a ride for D.J. so he could attend,” said Candace Case, event organizer.

Donations and a 50/50 drawing at the dance helped raise about $3,000.

“Over $3,000 was raised at the event, including the 50/50 funds, which were won and then donated back to the cause,” said Case.

The unidentified winner of the 50/50 opted to give the $650 back to D.J., to put toward the van.

Case wished to thank the many individuals and area businesses who donated toward the fundraiser.

“We want to thank them for making this event possible. We’d also like to thank all those who helped in any way and to those who braved the storm to attend,” Case said.

A total of $9,000 has been raised over the last month, according to Case, through the dance, the sale of 50/50 tickets, bake sales and a flower sale.

“Half of the money has come in to purchase a van,” said Case.

Anyone interested in making a donation can send it to: A Van for DJ, 22 Dupont Drive, Presque Isle, ME 04769,” said Case.
