UMPI baseball team bows out of playoffs
LYNN, Mass. — The University of Maine at Presque Isle fell to SUNY-Canton Saturday, 7-5, and as a result was eliminated from the Sunrise Conference baseball playoff tournament.
The Owls had lost to Fisher College in the opener Friday, 15-5, before topping Vermont Technical College Saturday, 3-2, in a loser’s bracket contest.
In the loss to SUNY-Canton, Corey Harding went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, Stephen Thorne doubled and also had two RBIs and Ted Walker tripled to lead UMPI’s offense. Dylan Worster allowed nine hits and struck out five in six innings of work to suffer the pitching loss.
UMPI had staved off elimination with the 3-2 win over Vermont Tech earlier that day.
Carlos Villoria, who was announced as a Sunrise Conference all-conference selection, had two hits, including a double, and scored a run and knocked in another. Five other Owl players hit safely in the victory. UMPI pitcher Jake Fillebrown struck out 12 batters and scattered 10 hits in the complete-game win.
Fisher won Friday behind Reynaldo Nunez’s grand-slam home run in the third inning. Six pitchers saw work for UMPI, including Walker, Harding, Andy Brown, Ryan Thompson, Brian Andrews and Evan Kingsbury.
James Cirell had three hits and an RBI and Harding added two hits and two RBIs for the Owls. Seth Cote was another repeat hitter with two singles.
UMPI finished the season with a 7-27 overall record.
