The Presque Isle Wildcats’ boys tennis team won three consecutive matches in a four-day stretch, beating Caribou, Hermon and Fort Kent to shrug off its opening-match loss at Ellsworth April 23.

Presque Isle won all three home matches by 5-0 scores as singles players Caleb Mathers, Connor Shaw and Emerson Castro and the doubles teams of Osman Castro-Brock Cassidy and Mike Picard-Andrew Legassie all went undefeated.

In Friday’s match against Caribou, Emerson Castro was tested in an 8-5 win over Phil Smith in third singles, but the remainder of the competition featured relatively easy decisions.

CALEB MATHERS prepares to strike a forehand during Presque Isle’s match against Hermon held Saturday afternoon at the UMPI courts. The Wildcat boys defeated the Hawks, 5-0.

On Saturday, second singles player Shaw had to battle for a 9-7 win over Hermon’s Nathan Matthews. Both of the Wildcats doubles combinations gained 8-0 wins.

Mathers, PI’s No. 1 singles player for the second consecutive year, continued his early-season dominance with an 8-2 triumph over Fort Kent’s Isaac Mitchell on Monday afternoon. Again, the doubles teams were virtually unchallenged, while Castro doubled up the Warriors’ Logan Doak, 8-4.

The Presque Isle girls are now 1-3 on the season, with the lone win coming Saturday over the Hawks by a 3-2 decision.

In that match, the Wildcats’ doubles teams came up big and paved the way for the victory. Elise Jones and Melissa Carson won an 8-2 decision over Brittany Overlock and Taylor Rose Bean in first singles, while the No. 2 doubles duo of Sara Gilson and Chelsey Carroll gave up just one game in a win over Nicole Overlock and Brittany Duell.

Presque Isle’s Lindsay Michaud had her team’s other victory in third singles, 8-6 over Margaret Pierce.

DANI WOLLAND follows through after hitting a two-handed backhand during Saturday’s match against Hermon.

Dani Wolland fell 8-2 in first singles and Divya Bisht challenged but lost her second singles match, 9-7.

On Friday, Blair Bailey teamed with Gilson in second doubles against Caribou and lost to Alexa Massey and Aly Michaud, 8-3. Wolland and Bisht were both shut out in their matches.

Monday, the Wildcats were beaten by Fort Kent, 3-2. The lone PI wins came in doubles as Jones-Carson and Carroll-Gilson both prevailed.
