PRESQUE ISLE – Elwood N. “Woody” Jewell Sr., 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday morning, May 21, 2011, at his daughter’s residence in Presque Isle. He was born in Monticello on April 9, 1916, the son of Josiah and Mazie (Nelson) Jewell.
He worked for 34 years at Coca Cola Bottling Co. in Presque Isle. “Woody” served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in Guam. He enjoyed playing BINGO, dancing, and bowling.
He is survived by his son, Rev. Roger Jewell and his wife, Gayle of Caribou; a daughter , Minerva Buxton and her husband, Bill of Houlton; a daughter, Sadie Shields and her husband, Charles of Linneus; a daughter, Mary Dickinson and her husband, Dana of Presque Isle; a daughter, Gail Jewell and her significant other, John Martinelli of Mapleton; a son, Nelson Jewell and his wife, Shirley of Levant; a daughter, Shirley Jewell and her significant other, Joseph Bourgoine of Washburn; a son, Greg Jewell and his significant other, Tammy Spring of New Hampshire; a daughter, Priscilla Slagger and her husband, David of Kenduskeag; a sister, Geraldine Lentini of Kensington, Conn.; 29 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers; a sister; two grandsons: Benjamin Jewell and Lenny Shields; a granddaughter, Anne Marie Parsons; two great-granddaughters: Michaela Rose and Melissa Parsons; and a son-in-law, Leonard Shields.
A Celebration of Life will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, with Rev. Roger Jewell officiating. Friends may call noon until time of service at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will be at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Caribou, followed by a celebration gathering at the home of Dana and Mary Dickinson, 49 Sunset Loop, Presque Isle, Donations may be made in his memory to the Visiting Nurses of Aroostook, 14 Access Hwy,.
