Chapter 10
Disabled American Veteran
Presque Isle
We have no illusion about what little we can add now to the silent testimony of those who gave their lives willingly for their country. Words are even more feeble on this Memorial Day, for the sight before us is that of a strong and good nation that stands in silence and remembers those who loved and who, in return, loved their countrymen enough to die for them.
Yet, we must try to honor – not for their sake alone, but for our own. And if words cannot repay the debt we owe these men, surely with our actions we strive to keep faith with them and with the vision that led them to battle and to final sacrifice.
Memorial Day is about honoring all our veterans and service members, who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our country whether in battle, in support of combat operations or having died in the line of duty just doing their jobs. It is also a day to reflect on knowing these sacrifices come because your country’s military is protecting our nation and all it stands for, and remains continuously ready to do so for our freedom.
