Shelby Hartin
Valedictorian
Jonathan Porter, principal at Southern Aroostook Community School, has announced the Honor Parts for the Class of 2011. Shelby Hartin was named valedictorian while Cassie Garcelon was named salutatorian; David DuBois II, first honor essayist; and Jasmine Rockwell, second honor essayist.
Hartin is the daughter of Craig and Tammy Hartin of Crystal. She has been very active in all sports including varsity girls basketball, varsity softball, varsity girls soccer as well as YBOA her junior and senior years.
Hartin was the recipient of All Aroostook in soccer and basketball. She has been involved in drama for two years and music for four years of high school. Other organizations she has been involved with include Dollars for Scholars, Varsity Club, and Yearbook.
She was class president her freshman, sophomore and junior year, as well as band librarian. Hartin was inducted into the National Honor Society her junior year and has volunteered for the American Red Cross Blood Drive. She has been a mentor for the After School Program and has volunteered in summer soccer camps. During the summer of her junior year, she did an internship as a research assistant for Eileen Hunt-Botting working for Pat Hunt’s campaign for State Representative.
Hartin was the recipient of the Maine Youth Leadership award, Phi Beta Kappa award and most recently, the Maine Principal’s award. She has attended the Rotary Luncheon for receiving various awards. Hartin was chosen by staff as Student of the Quarter and was a Girls State delegate her junior year. She has volunteered for the Island Falls Rec. Department.
Hartin plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono in the fall.

Salutatorian
Garcelon is the daughter of Angie Small of Smyrna Mills and Charles Garcelon of Hermon. Her athletic activities have included varsity soccer, varsity basketball and varsity softball, being manager of softball for one year and baseball for one year. Garcelon has been a band member for eight years, receiving All-Aroostook honors in both eighth and ninth grade. She has participated in the Drama Club for four years. Garcelon is also a member of the National Honor Society, Varsity Club, Yearbook (being co-editor and editor) and the Student Council for four years where she held office of secretary for three years and was voted president her senior year.
Garcelon was chosen by staff as Student of the Quarter for four years. Her community involvement includes being a volunteer for soccer camp and most recently, she did an internship as a research assistant for Eileen Hunt-Botting working for Pat Hunt’s campaign for State Representative. Her honors include the INBRE Summer Academy in Genomics, Girls State delegate, Princeton Book award recipient, and the Society of Women Engineers (for the highest combined math/science GPA).
Garcelon plans to attend the University of New England in the fall studying neuroscience/pre-med. David DuBois II
First Honor Essayist
DuBois is the son of David and Debra DuBois of Island Falls. He is a member of the National Honor Society, is a member of the Varsity Club and has participated in Varsity Soccer and been a member of the Golf team. Dubois has also been involved in Dollars for Scholars. He was a Boys State delegate. Dubois played on the Maine State New England Golf team and he was named Aroostook Golf champion in 2009 and runner-up in 2008 and in 2010. He has also established his own Ebay business.
Dubois will attend Husson University, majoring in business and playing on the golf team.

Second Honor Essayist
Rockwell is the daughter of Marty and Janet Rockwell of Oakfield. She has been very active in athletics throughout high school, participating in basketball, soccer, and softball. She has served as captain of both basketball and soccer teams and has earned All Aroostook in basketball, soccer and softball. Rockwell is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in Dollars for Scholars. Staff chose her as Student of the Quarter. She has also served as class treasurer, vice president and currently serves as president of the senior class. Jasmine was an alternate to Girls State.
She plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono in the fall majoring in athletic training.
